FC6 install error "unable to unmount cdrom"

I am trying to install FC6 by upgrading FC5 from the i386 DVD
The installer after trying to check for dependencies for installed packages gives an error message "unable to unmount CDROM...." and pressing okay button simply repeats the error in an infinite loop

Any idea how to proceed furthur?

No idea, but based on my recent experience on upgrading from Fedora 5 to Fedora 6 using the dvd, I don't really recomend it to anyone. I had severe problems on the new system, starting from no graphical interface, yum not working, a lot of broken dependencies, etc...The way I was able to rescue the system was with a fresh install of Fedora 6 in another partiton and, with chroot, to make an upgrade with yum, which I was finally able to install properly. Even after this, there remained some broken packages that were recognized by synaptic. It took a lot of time and hardwork to clean up the system.

i got the same problem,

unexpectedly i found that it does not try to unmount CD if you not selected KDE to be installed. :(

I gooogled and found a lot of people having this problem too.:)

And in most cases it desn`t matter what packages were selected to be installed, installer tried to unmout CD in the middle of the process.:confused:

Doing a bit of searching indicated that installer seems to have difficulties reading from the disc if it's in a high-speed drive.
I found posts where people said they got rid of this problem by replacing CD-DVD drive, and this is what i`m going to do also ...;)

IMHO replacing drive is not a solution, its the installer which should be fixed, I'll probably wait for FC7 having given up on FC6 :(

i got another DVD drive (taken from friend`s box), but unfortunately it did not help.

So i installed FC6 with default set of packages (without KDE, Development, Servers). And then installed KDE manually.

Hey Guys I had a similar error with the DVD installation.

My problem got solved by burning the dvd at the lowest (4x) speed....
I was using a DVD-RW though.... Hope it will help U too.

I had a similar error during install of FC7, always on, IIRC, 8% of the package install. Pressing alt-f2,3,4 etc when the error appears revealed some terminals showing me that there were read errors accessing the dvd I was installing from. It looked as if I'd burned a bad dvd, although I had tested the burned dvd using the installers own Test function with no errors. I tested it a second time, once I had problems. The read errors seemed to lead to the erroneous 'unable to unmount cdrom' error message.

I was installing onto a very old PIII Fujitsu Lifebook laptop, which must be about 4 years old. I had burned the fc7 install dvd from my other laptop, using an external Sony DRX-S50U dvd burner combo drive that I bought last year, only 1 year old. I put the burned dvd into the old laptop and repeatedly got this install error.

After reading this thread, I tried plugging the same external drive that I used to burn the dvd into the old laptop, and tried installing from it, instead of using the built-in dvd drive in the old laptop. It installed fine, with no error.

So, using the same burner drive, used to burn the install dvd, to actually install fc7 onto a laptop, worked. My dvd media are some kind of HQD full-face-printable disc; because they're full face printable they don't have much else written on them to help identify them. Presumably the dvd I had burned was incompatible in some way with the older internal dvd drive of the laptop, leading to this misleading error message. It's on 56% of the install now, damn it's slow... slow old laptop I mean. Only 28 gig hard drive :) heh. Oh, I remember... etc.

I agree with fooks' first post, it doesn't matter what packages you select to install. I tried with and without KDE using the internal drive, both failed. I have now selected, from the basic options given by the installer, nothing on top of a bare bones system. That'll give me Gnome, X-windows, and the default core package. No 'office and productivity' etc. No KDE.

Hope this helps someone :) I might post lspci output once I'm up and running if anyone's interested in what internal drive this old laptop has. And if I can get the network working :) Oh what fun. For some value of fun.
