FC6, "incorrect arch", Transmeta Crusoe, i586/i686

I tried to install FC6 on my Fujitsu Lifebook P-2040 notebook. This notebook runs currently FC5 without any problems. I tried the FC6-Live DVD before and it worked just fine. However, when installing FC6, everything works just fine (including erasing the hard disk) until the first packages are being installed. The installation fails then with an "incorrect arch" message and offers to reboot. This apparently happens because the Transmeta Crusoe processor of the notebook is reported as an "i586" device but the 32bit-x86-FC6 accepts only i686 cpus. I tried to change configuration files before anaconda starts installing packages (like /etc/arch) but that didn't help.

Anybody got any idea how to fool anaconda into accepting an i586 as i686?

best,
Werner

The only workaround I found to install FC6 on this Transmeta Crusoe notebook is to install FC4 and then use the "upgrade an existing installation" feature of the FC6 installer. FC6 runs just fine on this notebook and I haven't had any problem with the new release so far.

Werner

I had the same problem but found another solution:

- during install switch to console (e.g. ctrl-alt-f2)
- edit /etc/rpm/platform
- change i686 to i586

continue normally with installation :)

I'm not sure which the right point of time during install is to do this modification, but at least before the installer collects the data to select the appropriate packages. Last install stage before this was definition of the root password iirc

that works like wonder

thanks to another newbie CCVI, I'm smooth sailing with FC6 on my Fujitsu Lifebook P-2040. CCVI is right on with this workaround, fooling FC6 before it collects the data. I did it right before submitting in my root password. Thanks!

Anyone other Fujitsu Lifebook P-series owner or other owner of a chip speed equivalent to transmeta 800mhz (I only have 256mb) a bit sluggish running FC6? I'm upgrading from RHEL4 and there was a noticeable drag. Not that I'm hoping FC6 to be any less graphic intensive than RHEL4.

Easiest Way to install FC5/FC6 on Crusoe Systems

Fedora Core 5 also has this problem, though the work-around on this thread didn't work for me. However, I did find something that did work (from RedHat/Bugzilla support) after logging a case with the Fedora project. I assume that this will also work with Fedora Core 6, but I have not tried loading FC6 as yet:

At the boot prompt for the install CD/DVD, just enter the following, instead of hitting 'enter' on a blank line:

linux rpmarch=i586

This will force the installer to use i586 packages instead of assuming i686 is correct.

This works great for installing Fedora Core 5 onto an "old" Fujitsu P2120D laptop.
