FC5 pcmcia udev/hotplug strangeness
 

I'm new to FC5 and an overall beginner with Linux.

I've installed 2.6.15-1.2054_FC5 on an HP pavillion ze1110 twice. Each time I had one of two PCMCIA NIC in (WG511 and Hawking cardbus 10/100) and the card works great. However, when I try to switch to the other card, the udev/hotplug function does not work and I can't use the new card. Plug the original card back in, works fine. I've tried to modprobe the drivers and then plug in, but still no luck. Also, tried reboot after modprobe, still no luck. lsmod and dmesg shows the driver loaded, but I get a

eth0:restting device
eth0: uploading firmware...
prism54: request_firmware() failed for 'isl3890'
eth0: could not upload firmware ('isl3890')
eth0: islpci_reset: failure

for the wireless card. Similar for the wired card.
It doesn't matter which card was in when I install the OS, but that is the only card that will work. lspci does not show the new card either. Is the solution to install the OS with "no" card installed or is there a setting someplace that I'm just missing. Apologies ahead of time if there is a solution posted somewhere but I've googled for about 3 days now and haven't found anything.

I would try installing the OS w/o anything in the PCMCIA slots. The installer probably sees the hardware and thinks it is permanent.

You can probably get by just by running kudzu (w/o anything in PCMCIA), but if that fails to solve the problem, try installing w/o the card.

I did just that, re-installed the OS with no cards inserted, now the hotplug/udev function is working properly. Now to enable WPA on the card...lots of reading to do judging from the Google hits.
