FC5 dies before during Package Installation?!
EDIT-----Problem has been resolved ---- see 1st reply
I'am updating my system from a dual boot WindowsXP & Fedora 4. Windows was running poorly (time for a reinstall) and Core 5 has come out... might as well upgrade. I'am not a newbie nor a guru. I have searched the forums and not found any thing exactly like this error. My system: P4 3ghz Intel 875P + ICH5R chipset 3hdd's 1 IDE 2 SATA I have tried .Redhat 9, suse 10, mandrake, and fedora 4 all on this box and haven't had any issues. However the IDE drive although not new is the newest drive to the system. Bios is running sata in enhanced mode and reads: IDE drive is IDE channel 0 /dev/hda SATA drives IDE channel 2&3 /dev/sda & sdb Primary boot drive is SATA drive on channel 2 /dev/sda1 This time around I installed winXP, had to disconnect ide drive to use sata as windows boot drive (as it was before).. reconnected ide windows boots and works fine.... (I don't remember doing this the last time but it was the only way to get windows to install to sata drive and avoid a "disk error" message upon boot. boot.ini ntldr etc where being copied to IDE drive since its second partition (hda3) was reading as drive C during the windows install) Next.... Install FC5 (gui and text modes)... everything goes smoothly, select partitions...(tried multiple manual configurations see current partitions in image at end of post) select packages and on the next step.. actuall install of files. I get an error saying anaconda is closing and even says "this is probablly a bug"... Anaconda dumps me at the command prompt and says "your machine is now safe to reboot" I haven't tried re-installing FC4, I have a hunch it would work and my error is specific to FC5. I am using the dvd media, even re-downloaded it, both times they check out in media check and checksum. The anaconda dump file seems to point to an error when establishing/mounting the /tmp partition. But understanding all the contents of this file are a little beyond me. Of course as soon as I'm at the end of my rope and post a thread on my issues... the issues work themselves out...
As to the exact reason why the install wasn't working I don't know.. but This last time around I tried two things differently... 1. During the partitioning step I did not assign mount points to my existing partitions. I was just trying to avoid the process of editing my fstab later.. 2. Changed the drive order in the advanced boot loader settings to correspond to the bios boot order and not the bios device order. Which installed grub on the the MBR of the windows boot partition /dev/sda (see original post) I don't know if it was 1 or 2 that fixed the problem but I'm guessing it was 1. the install process never got to the boot loader installation before, it would always die when trying to install the packages. Now FC5 and XP are installed and booting without issues. |
