FC3 - without Boot Loader ??

Can i boot-up FC3 using Floppy/CD image without using a boot loader? (As in early RedHat versions)

Because i want to use winxp`s Hibernate feature, & it might get conflict if there`s a boot loader.

The Linux 2.6 kernel is too big to fit on a floppy disk, so boot floppies aren't possible any more with standard Linux distributions.

IIRC, the "chainloader" option in the GRUB boot loader passes you to another (Windows) boot loader, so that your XP installation is actually booted from the Microsoft boot loader.

The boot.iso is for booting for an installation (from a network server or hard drive). Could you give a link for the problem with GRUB and XP hibernate ? I might be able to suggest something more specific.

You could use a trick that is as old as linux and let the windows NT loader direct the booting of linux.

Here is one explanation of how to do it ( http://www.enterprisedt.com/publications/dual_boot.html ), but you can find hundreds, if not thousands, of similar explanations on the web. This one talks about LILO, but you carry out the same steps with GRUB. Follow the instructions in section 4 entitled “Set up the dual boot”.

Briefly, you copy the first 512 bytes of the partition holding /boot to a file and move the file to the windows partition. Then you add a line to windows c:/boot.ini that points to the file. The first 512 bytes of the /boot containing partition are commonly known as the boot sector, for obvious reasons.

It is the same approach used a long time ago to boot DOS from old versions of NT. So, in a sense, this method is actually older than linux.

Unhappy

Friends,
thanx for the great help. I worked on the link provided,
& today i tried to install GRUB(On MBR).
But after the package installation it gives a messege(As posted on this forum for FC4)
saying,

No kernal packeges found on your system. MBR kept untouched.

When rebooted it just says "No operating Systems found".

.................................................................................................... ...........................
Actually i have a prior experience on(RadHat 9 & XP) using boot loader & Hibernate feature
simultaneously causes to crash one my hard disk. So i`m bit afraid to use a boot loader.

It may be that there is an error with the hard drive. If the error was with a CD then the installing packages process usually halts when it reaches the damaged area of the CD.

I suspect that your problem with Red Hat 9 was that you accidently deleted the separate disk partition needed by the hibernate function during the partitioning stage of the installation - the boot loader itself doesn't alter partitions. Hibernate partitions are hidden in Windows but not under Linux, which can be confusing.

IC!!! As there is file named "hiberfil.sys" on C:\ drive, i thought everything regarding
Hibernate feature can be maneged under windows partition. OK it`s clear 4 me.

But what about the FC3 "No kernal packages installed" problem then.
It seems CD is OK, since installation got complete successfully.

Would it be solved by installing an update kit?
What kernal packeges should i installed if so?
