Error on GRUB upon booting.

I just installed Fedora Core 4 and everything went smooth. When it told me to reboot, I did and I continuously get the error:

Code:
GRUB loading stage1.5.

GRUB loading, please wait...
Error 17
This happens before the GRUB loader even loads, of course, and is displayed on a black screen. I do have the SuSE installation CDs, as I am replacing SuSE 10.0 with Fedora Core 4. I wanted to try out a new Linux Distro, which is why I'm trying Fedora.

I'm currently using my other computer to type this, since I can't boot up my other computer.

Does anyone have any clue on how I can fix this? Any suggestions would be great.... I'm desperate.

Thanks in advance,
Adam

This has happened to me more times than I care to remember.
First check your device.map and your fstab files. Make sure everything there is correct and all your drives and partitions are set up properly. After that check your grub.conf file. You want to make sure that grub is trying to boot off the correct parition.

Your going to need a liverun distro like Knoppix to do all this with. If your not sure about any of it, you can post the output of the three files I named on here and we'll take a look at them for you. If you need any help changing or viewing files just post again, i've used the Knoppix LiveRun CD many times to do this so i'm familiar with that part of it. Good luck!

As a side note, i've had alot of trouble using Grub with multiple HDDs. I don't know, and I haven't found anyone else but me who has had this problem, but I eneded up dropping back to one HDD to fix it. I hope you haven't run into what I did, that sucked!

I'm a total newbie to Linux, so it would help very much if you could walk me step-by-step (preferrably in one post because my friend is using this computer while I watch TV and wait).

If it helps, I'm using Windows XP: Home Edition on one hard drive, and am installing Fedora Core 4 on the other. My Windows drive is 120 GB and is (C on Windows, and hda on Linux. My two partitions for Fedora are on a 40 GB hard drive and were set up automatically, since I still don't understand too much about the partitioning.

Thank you very much for your reply.

Alright then, first off your going to have to download a liveCD since you can't get into your Linux through windows. Like I recomended earlier download and burn a copy of Knoppix. After you that just let it boot it up (press enter at the boot prompt it gives you). This will boot you into a graphcial interface which will be easier to use. Once there Knoppix should auto mount your two harddrives and put them on your desktop. Open up the drive that contains your linux install. In the folder labled "boot" open up the file "device.map" copy and paste its contents onto this thread. Also in the boot folder there should be another folder labeled "grub" in there you'll find the "grub.conf" file, open it and paste it contents onto this thread as well. Finally you'll need to copy and your fstab file on here too. I forget where its at right now because I'm tired of looking at this screen, but you can use the search tool to find it. Post those and we'll move on from there. Good luck.

I've decided to revert back to SuSE Linux because my friend wouldn't let me on my other computer to go to these forums. Thanks for your help, but I won't be needing it.
