Unhappy aRTS and ALSA conflict or bad configuration

I installed Fedora 2. My sound card was detected sucessfully and I heard sound during installation. I then logged into Gnome and the sound worked fine. I then switched to KDE and tried to play sound there but nothing happened. I then switched back to Gnome and the sound was gone there too. I read that there could be a conflict between aRTS and ALSA. I used the aRTS control tool and it showed what programs like xmms were using it. I don't know what could have caused this. Please help. Below is some of my system info

cat /etc/modprobe.conf

alias eth0 sis900
alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
install snd-intel8x0 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-intel8x0 && /usr/sbin/alsactl restore >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
remove snd-intel8x0 { /usr/sbin/alsactl store >/dev/null 2>&1 || : ; }; /sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove snd-intel8x0
alias usb-controller ehci-hcd
alias usb-controller1 ohci-hcd

/sbin/lsmod
