Yum Upgrade from FC5 "Floating point exception"

Hello,

I have just upgraded to FC6 from FC5 using yum, and I did this by getting the fedora-release-6-4.noarch.rpm and fedora-release-notes-6-3.noarch.rpm packages and doing a yum upgrade. It seemed to go smoothly, but when I rebooted, my x server failed to start, and I was left with a console. All of my files are still intact, but now when trying to run certain programs (rpm, yum, and firefox to name a few), I get this one same error: "Floating point exception."

I tried updating my kernel to 2.6.18, and I was able to successfully build it (I can run make, wget, locate, vim, and several other programs), but, as I had thought the problem may have been with Python (2.4), when I tried to build a different version of Python (2.3), I got an error saying that it cannot run "c++ compiled programs."

So, I have run out of ideas. I can't get my x server started, and many useful programs that may be able to help me fix the problem give a "floating point exception." Also, a random short program I had compiled with gcc ages ago gave the floating point exception when I tried to run it. I have already tried installing an earlier version of gcc (FC6 update gave me gcc4.1.1 and I installed gcc3.4.6). I don't know what else to do.

I would be thankful for any suggestions.

Thanks!
Josh
