Yum on FC6. 'yum update' error.

Hi,

On executing 'yum update' on a freshly installed FC6 I get the following messages. Do note that I have not made any changes to the configuration files. They're all in their freshly installed state.

[root@brsig-tst2 yum.repos.d]# yum update
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Setting up Update Process
Setting up repositories
Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mir...re-6&arch=i386 error was
[Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (111, 'Connection refused')>
Error: Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: core

What must I do to overcome this error?

The mirror list for core packages that was installed is for Canada, I notice you're profile has you in Kuwait, this is more than likely the problem. During installation you must have mistakenly selected Canada as your country. Or that is the default mirror for core packages, but I doubt it. I can't say it is or not because I'm from Canada and I'm sure my FC6 core repo.d file has the same one. I'm in F7 right now, but do have FC6 also.

Hi there,

Do you suppose that changing the region would be a plausible solution to this glitch? If yes, where in FC 6 do I do that?

Ruling out the above possibility, what else can be done? Help would be greatly appreciated.

If you copy it and paste it in the address bar of your browser, you'll notice it will show you all the Canadian mirrors. If you shorten that url to this:

http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/

Stick that in the browser address bar and you'll notice there are mirrors all over the world.

I'm not sure how you would change that, might need to re-install. There's not much information at Fedora on how to change it as I've checked here.
The files are in /etc/yum.repos.d

A conflict with mirrors spanning across the globe is a possibility that I'd rather rule out as that would take off the entire purpose of hosting such mirrors.

Regarding the re-installation you mentioned. How is that going to help as that would only recreate the same set of .repo files?

I'm just wondering if by chance you selected the wrong country as your location in the installation, because there's no reason why it would set you up with Canadian mirrors when there are mirrors world wide. FC6 has been installed a few hundred thousand times and this is the first time I see this.

Then again, if it does set you up with Canadian mirrors again, that would have one thinking there is a flaw with the installation discs you are using. Have you verified their integrity by comparing the sha1 sum against the one at the download mirrors. If you downloaded via a torrent, they should already be verified.

There is always a first time is it not ;-)? Going through some of the posts put up on LQ I could see that there were other users who did bump into this issue. But I was unable to find any solution to the same.

As to your doubt about whether locale was chosen incorrectly during installation, I'm quite certain that I did choose the proper geographic locale.

I presume you've no more info for me on this as you said this is the first time you've come across such an error.

Anyway, really appreciate your replies.
