XDMCP - Fedora 12 - KDM - Connected but black screen.


This applies to GDM as well, but I'm using KDM right now so:
Linux 2.6.31.12-174.2.19.fc12.x86_64 #1 SMP x86_64

I setup XDMCP:

/etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc
[Xdmcp]
Enable=true
Willing=/etc/X11/xdm/Xwilling
Xaccess=/etc/X11/xdm/Xaccess

[security]
AllowRemoteRoot=true
DisallowTCP=false


/etc/kde/kdm/Xaccess (link to the xdm 'xaccess' file) includes:

* CHOOSER BROADCAST

In KDM settings I set it to 'no theme' and 'no custom background' so it's totally plain.

iptables & SELinux are both off. The client & server are both on the same switch.


I can connect successfully. But all I get is a black screen & an X cursor, never get to see the login prompt.

Most things I find have to do with the inability to connect at all, but this connects.
I'm having this problem on RHEL5.4, CentOS5.4, & Fedora 12. I'm troubleshooting it on Fedora though.

Unlike other posts, I'm not able to even log in. Others posted a black screen after logging in, this is not that same issue.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Edit/Update 2/23/10:
I must point out that for CentOS5/RHEL5 I got this working, but I didn't do anything differently that I know of. I just repeated the same process over again....but I'm using GDM on those.
Is it possible that I may have to use GDM for KDE because it works with GDM?

I'd like to get KDM working because that's what it's designed to do right? work the way it's configured...

I've not had a chance to look into it with KDM since the time that I posted this thread.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I've figured out nothing since I posted this. I've been checking security, network, blah blah blah... My desktop does XDMCP just fine with other boxes & it runs Fedora 12 but using GDM. Laptop with KDM still no-go. I've tried connecting over both wired & wireless, same thing.

It works with KDM. I do it from my ubuntu machine to my slackbox constantly. It sounds obvious, but do you have the target box in an appropriate runlevel to provide a graphical login? If I forget to put my target Slack box in runlevel 4 (graphical logins) then I get the blank screen you are describing. Simply starting X on the target doesn't do the trick as KDM isn't handling the logins.

It's using runlevel 5 which is graphical login for RH/Fedora.
I know whatchya mean, XDMCP runs off of KDM/GDM/XDM which isn't running in the non-graphical login init levels...obviously.

I was looking to post my working kdmrc file, but it seems that the file I edited has been replaced by something that was autoconfigured during an update and I doubt it will be of any help since I don't even recognize the file as being of the same form. I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Thanks for trying.

I'm still not able to remedy this mainly because I'm not sure where else I should be looking with this... Does anyone have a working config I could try replacing mine with?

That's mine in it's entirety. The only line I have to edit to get working XDMCP sessions on my lan is enable=<change to true>
I start the sessions with the command
