X X11 xwindow crashed and won't come back up

FC4
Diamond Viper 32M video card (old)
Sharp LCD
everything was going fine (excluding the random mozilla crashes)...

One day last week I logged out of Xwindows and crash, nothing. I had
not changed anything. I had no idea what to do since I had not changed
anything on the system, so I changed root's password and did a reboot.
When it came back up linux booted, the screen went blank and the X
looking mouse pointer showed up, the screen went blue and the hourglass appeared, then back to black for a while...repeat 6 times ro so untill a blue text box full screened appeared and said that it had tried to initialize 6 times and would wait 20 seconds before attempting another restart. From there I switched to tty2 and just logged in normally. So I went in to /etc/intittab and commented out the run level 5 x command so it wouldn't even try that mess anymore.

so I go and run up2date, got the system current.

ran startx from a telnet session from a networked comp, and this is what I get: the server screen goes black, I get the X mouse pointer, blue screen with centered FEDORA splash (where the icons load) and all this has spewed to my (telnet) window...

[root@mydomain ~]# startx

(gnome-session:8321): Pango-WARNING **: No builtin or dynamically loaded modules
were found. Pango will not work correctly. This probably means
there was an error in the creation of:
'/etc/pango/pango.modules'
You may be able to recreate this file by running pango-querymodules.

(gnome-session:8321): Pango-CRITICAL **: _pango_engine_shape_shape: assertion `PANGO_IS_FONT (font)' failed

..WTF?! Ok so I went and ran pango-querymodules-32 and piped the output to the file pango.modules and it still does this over and over and over untill it gives up....

any ideas? thanks!
