X stopped working

Hello
Iīm running Fedora Core 2 with kernel 2.6.5-1 and I was making a new Kernel (2.6.8.1)
When I had made the Kernel Image and Restarted the computer and chose the new Kernel then the computer could not start the X and asked me if I wanted to see some log about it. I tried Booting into the old kernel and I got the same problem so itīs not only the kernel which is fucked up.

The most amazing part though is that the computer goes through the graphical startup fine just when it reaches the end and is supposed to show me the login window it stopped working

So the problems are as follow I cant get into the X configurator (Typing Xconfigurator doesnīt work)

Here is the log file the computer showed me
by my understanding from it then some refresh rates are set to high but I canīt enter any configurator tools to correct it
I wasnīt allowed to post the entire log so this is a shortened versoin. put the entire log online if neccessary.

Thanx :)

Isnīt there anyone out there who knows how to reconfigure the X server or get into the configuration tool
I have tried both Xconfigurator and XFree -config and it didnīt understand XFree as a command.

So anyone Please help

justin_p 09-28-2004 01:44 PM

On the 2.6.5 kernel were you running NVIDIA drivers? If you were you need to also install them on the new kernel. Follow the same directions that you used to install them before except make sure that you selected the 2.6.8.1 kernel in grub.

If you are not using the nvidia driver we'll have to hope that someone sees this and can help.

sueno 09-28-2004 03:04 PM

Installing Nvidia drivers I have geforce 2 video card and it worked before it was there when I installed the OS maybe those drivers where installed automaticly and if so then knowing how to install those drivers would be nice.

Thanx Alot for your suggestion Justin P it might be what is bothering me but it doesnīt matter which kernel I boot into could this still be the Matter?

Thanx and please anybody whith any suggestions on how to start a configuration program for the Xorg

reddazz 09-29-2004 02:41 AM

when you upgrade kernels or compile new kernels and have the nvidia drivers installed, you need to reinstall that driver, so that it is compiled against you new kernels source. Try reinstalling the driver and then starting your xserver. By the way, you use "xorgconfig" to configure the X server in Fedora Core 2

sueno 09-29-2004 05:29 PM

Itīs getting weirder

Weird, I typed xorgconfig and got the reply command not found.

Iīm not buying the part with the nvidea driver because I never installed any driver for this card (I just plugged it in and it worked) I was actually running RH7 at that time and there was no problem so to make that clear that I havenīt installed any nvidea driver so if thats going to solve my problem then I need to know how to install a driver for the nvidea card.

Another fact. This was the third time I compile a Kernel this month (there was always something wrong) and this is the first time something goes wrong with my X.

Plus if this has something to do with a driver being compiled against the kernel then shouldnīt I be able to boot into my other kernels and everything should be working fine, It doesnīt matter which one of the kernels I boot into the X server wont start.

Hope someone knows how to solve this.

Thanx

sueno 09-29-2004 05:58 PM

I googled for xorgconfig and itīs correctly spelled I also found another command which was xorgsetup and it gave the same output (command not found)

so iīm wondering is there something seriously wrong with my xorg application and could it just have happened because of my kernel compilations or is a bug which is bugging me.

thanx again for your time

bornhj 09-29-2004 06:31 PM

try as root:

Code:

vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf
should give you access to your config file.

oh, and you're right, you're not using NVIDIA drivers. log says it's using default 'nv' driver

sueno 09-30-2004 04:39 PM

Hmmmms

Apperantly I donīt have any /etc/x11 folder so there is no configfile either.

could it be somewhere else or does this mean that my computer is vegetable?
Just wondering! :)

sueno 09-30-2004 06:19 PM

Iīm getting there

Hello I think this will be coming soon

I got a new Xorg version (v. 6.8.1) from x.org and I was able to run the xorgconfig BUT I think I configured it incorrectly the screen turns to black when there are supposed to come some graphics ,and I donīt remember the key combination to turn of the GUI so i can reconfigure it

Thanx for the help already

sueno 09-30-2004 06:38 PM

Iīm just wondering isnīt there a way to make the Fedora Core 2 boot in non graphical mode. I thought it was cool tho boot in graphical mode but it isnīt nearly as cool when the screen just turns black and there is nothing I can do.

mjmwired 09-30-2004 07:26 PM

At the grub screen chose to edit, then go to the 'kernel' line in the kernel you want to boot, at put a '3' (without quotes) at the very end. Hit enter, and boot into it. This forces it into runlevel 3 (no X-server).

My kernel notes

sueno 10-01-2004 03:57 PM

Ok how is it exactly

Well you now Iīm a newbie and learning this

I restart the computer and I get the grub menu with all the kernels which I have Installed.
I chose the Kernel I want to boot into press "e" for edit and there i get three more options I go to the option which starts with Kernel (something ) and then I chose "e"again and add 3 at the very end of the line, OK so now what did I do wrong because The computer did the same as usual it went on with the boot until the graphical part came and then it turned black.

Hope someone can tell me what Iīm doing wrong.

Thanx

bornhj 10-01-2004 09:01 PM

I think you have to highlight the kernel you want, hit 'a' and then put a 3 at the end of the line. make sure there is a space between the last argument and the 3 e.g. on my kernels, the line would be:

blahblahblah quiet 3

sueno 10-02-2004 09:47 AM

Now the sorgconfig

OK thanks borhj I have managed to let the computer start up without the Xserver

Now I have to find a way through the xorgconfig I have run it a few times and always been something wrong the driver doesnīt support 24 bit color so I ran it again and chose 16 bit color and got the error that 16 bit color wasnīt supported either.

In the xorgconfig first greeting it mentions SuperProbe as something to help finding out video card chip sets and monitor types. I tried typing SuperProbe in the command line but it replied "SuperProbe command not found" so Iīm getting bewildered here.

Iīm also wondering isnīt there any autoconfigurating tools like xorgsetup is for Slackware.

Thanx
