read the X log files to see what the error actually is. /var/log/Xorg.0.log and look for (EE) lines

Its a long file and there is no EE lines although the following text is present at the end of the file:

Could not init font path element unix/:7100, removing from list!

Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'

ahh. xfs ( the X Font Server) isn't running then. start the server. i believe there are plans afoot to deprecate xfs, but i don't think they are anywhere near fruition at the moment.

no no not at all... is xfs running? another thing is that font paths have changed recently. check that the paths to your fonts in xorg.conf actually do exist.

I have found the following lines in xorg.conf

RgbPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb"
FontPath "unix/:7100"

Is it ok for you?
