i wanna check out some window managers. i've downloaded the window maker rpm for fedora (WindowMaker-0.80.2-0.fdr.6.1.i386.rpm)
i've installed with rpm -ivh, everything went fine, i can see it in apt-get.
how do i start it? on start-up, i can only choose between default (gnome), kde, gnome, and terminal.
other question: is a window manager a good alternative to a desktop environment?
i'll answer you second questionfirst... YES a window manager can be a good alternative to a desktop environment, i find windowmaker especially well suited for this
in answer to your first question at the command line try
the quick and dirty way would be
when that finishes running
'echo exec wmaker > ~/.Xclients-default
then select 'default' whenever you want windowmaker
that can be a pain in the a** eventually
the more elegant way would be to put a file "WindowMaker" (or whatever you want your label to be)
with the following contents:
exec /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession wmaker
then chmod 777 /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions/WindowMaker
the 2nd way didnt work, did the 1st way, no problems :) window maker is default now.
thanx 4 the help!
first impressions are good, although i see its smthg completely different than the windows-like desktop environments.
i'm using german characters. they don't appear in the menus, i get some kind of "codes" instead. how do i make ü, ö, ä, etc appear?
