Why FTP server: proftpd NOT working?

I did this:

yum install proftpd
/etc/init.d/proftpd start

I tried to FTP to it using Firezilla and I get:

Status: Connecting to web02 ...
Status: Connected with web02. Waiting for welcome message...
Error: Disconnected from server
Error: Unable to connect!
Status: Waiting to retry... (5 retries left)
Status: Connecting to web02 ...
Status: Connected with web02. Waiting for welcome message...

I even try login using root. What could be wrong? thanks

Try logging in via your web browser. Do: ftp://username@ip or hostname:21

Issue this command as root to see if there are any syntax errors in your proftpd.conf file: proftpd -td5

Sounds like you may have a firewall issue. Are you behind a router w/ built in firewall? Have you forwarded port 21 to your linux box? Do you have a firewall enabled on your fedora installation? have you opened port 21?

On the box with proftpd installed issue this command: netstat -atu. Then look through the list for an entry that looks like this: tcp 0 0 *:ftp *:* LISTEN If you don't see an entry like that then proftpd is not running.

I ran netstat -atu, and got:

tcp 0 0 *:ftp *:* LISTEN

how do I know if port 21 is open? and how can I open it?
I also ran service --status-all, and got:

proftpd (pid 1974) is running...

thanks

Have you read my reply about checking firewall status yet?

As shafty023 has pointed out you may have your firewall on, in which case you need to configure it to allow ftp connections to port 21. It's under Main Menu--> System Settings--> Security Level.

Yes shafty023, you were right. It was a firewall issue, I followed {BBI}Nexus{BBI} steps and everything is working fine now! Thanks for the help, this is still the best linux forum!
