Why does packagekitd download so much stuff?

Hello All,
Shortly after I start my system (up to date Fedora 21 x86_64) I always see my network running flat out downloading, and this goes on for some time.
I eventually tracked it down to packagekitd, and assumed that it was getting updates, but that turns out to not be the case. After all this downloading by packagekitd I can run yumex and there are no updates. Other times I can run yumex and after considerable downloading by yumex there are updates. So, it is a mystery to me just what packagekitd is doing.
Can I dispense with packagekitd and how to do so?

Cheers,
Terry

I don't recall if I did the removal via rpm or yum, but, as you can see, PackageKit is all gone
Code:

~$ rpm -qa | grep -i package
python3-javapackages-4.3.2-4.fc22.noarch
perl-Package-Generator-1.106-3.fc22.noarch
javapackages-tools-4.3.2-4.fc22.noarch
fontpackages-filesystem-1.44-10.fc21.noarch

OK. When I try to remove packagekit (selecting it in yumex for removal) it tells me there are a number of other dependencies that are going to be taken out as well, gnome-software being one, which brings me back to my original question, or to put it another way, does it matter if the packagekit dependencies go as well?

Cheers,
Terry

Didn't matter for me, as I done run a Gnome desktop (I run Mate).

Does gpk-prefs still exist in F21 ?. If so, try setting the update to never maybe.

I decided to bite the bullet and removed packagekit and all that it depended on.
No untoward effects thus far.

Cheers,
Terry
