FC3 as user
Everytime you try to read a cd it comes back and say's it is already mounted and busy
and fails to read cd.
It won't even let you eject as user " eject failed" . you have to eject as SU.
You can't make any changes in /etc/fstab , if you reboot it resets fstab back to default.
What the heck are they trying to do?
Anyone that I get to try Linux they get fed up with the CDROM and go back to windows.
But not me , I'am going to stick around and let the CDrom pis- me off. and hope they
fix this problem, It has gotten worse ever since Fedora started, even RH9 was better.
One of these day's this thing is going to force me to get up on the top of my house
and jump off, I sure am glad my house is a one story house.

I don't have those problems with the cdrom in Fedora.
Maybe because I have automount and autorun turned off?

Make sure you install the updates - there were some udev updates that did solve a cdrom issue for some people.

I have no such problems. Everything automatically mounts and everything works normally. Set permissions for everyone to access the drive. I had a similar problem with an external USB drive.

Running FC2 & 3 can be frustrating for new converts to linux, until you learn the ins & outs, but you have to consider this, FC3 is a bleeding edge advanced OS. Not even windows (or it's future incarnation of longhorn) is as advanced as FC3. If you want simple stability, try something like CentOS. http://www.centos.org/
This is a free to download OSS version of RHEL3. aka RH9+.... You can upgrade portions of it to FC1 level using apt/synaptic. It is very stable, modern, easy to use, and fully functional. But it is not bleeding edge. I'm testing it but keep coming back to FC3.

Keeping on thread, I have no problems so far with the cdrom use. plug in a cdrom and it automounts. to unmount I must select eject from the right click dropdown menu. The disk management utility no longer works for my user identity, only for root.

How do you shut off the automount, autorun features ?

main applications menu --> Preferences --> Removable Storage

those settings are for Gnome are they not?
what about settings for KDE.

mickeyboa, have you tried updating your udev packages? There was an update for udev that fix some permission problem with cdroms...

version I have is: udev-039-10.FC3.2

I don't use KDE - can't help there

Definitely though update your system if you haven't.

rpm --import /usr/share/doc/fedora-release-3/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora

(you only have to do that once - do it if you haven't imported the GPG key ever)

Then -

yum update udev

(that'll test the udev theory)

After that - just run

yum update

to update everything.

This of course assumes you have a net connection. But you are posting here, so ...

I have all the current updates, I have udev-039-10.FC3.2.
If anyone out there knows howto shut down automount CD's in KDE-3.3 and FC3
I would like to here from you.
