Why Are The Icons Different When Accessing Via VNC?
 

I'm using FC2 on one PC, and RH9 on another.

The ~/.vnc/xstartup files on both PCs are the identical. Both have the following two lines:

unset SESSION_MANAGER
exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc

When I access the RH9 machine from a VNC session, the screen on the remote PC looks identical to the screen as it appears when I log in locally.

However, when I access the FC2 machine through a VNC session, a different set of icons is used as compared to when I log in locally.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Are you running VNC as a different user (/etc/sysconfig/vncservers) with a different theme and set of icons?

No, I login in remotely with the same username and password that I use locally. Interestingly, the backgroung image that I selected when accessing the computer locally, shows up correctly when I access the PC through VNC. What changes, however, are the icons in the taskbar as well as the icons on the desktop (computer, home, start here, and trash).

Locally, the desktop icons appear as a monitor next to a PC (for computer), a little house in front of a folder (for home), a compass/map (for start here), and a nice graphical trash can (for trash). On the taskbar, the OpenOffice icons appear as very nice graphical pictures (a pie chart/paper chart, a slide in front of a graphic, and a pen in front of a couple pieces of paper), the menu icon is a red hat, the taskbar Mozilla icon is a globe with an attached mouse, and the e-mail icon is an envelope and stamp.

When I log in remotely, the desktop icons for computer, home, and trash, are replaced by what appears to be a piece of paper with a slight curl in it, and the start here icon appears as a cruder version of the one that's used when accessing the PC locally. As for the icons on the task bar, the OpenOffice icons appear as "simpler" icons than those used when I log in locally--each is an icon of a piece of paper with different symbols on the paper to indicate the type of application. The Mozilla browser icon appears as the red dragon head, and the e-mail icon appears as the Evolution e-mail icon. And lastly, the red hat menu icon changes to the Gnome icon (the one that looks like a foot, or a letter "G").

I'm not sure if I mentioned this, but I'm using Gnome as my desktop.

I hope my descriptions are somewhat clear. If you have any ideas I would sure like to hear them. This is certainly not a big deal, I'm just curious why RH9 doesn't exhibit this strange behavior, and me, being a picky as I am, want my desktop to appear the way I set it up.

Did you come across any solution to this problem? I've experienced exactly the same thing with fedora core 2, where the icons change after launching a vnc session.

I've managed to restore the icons (temporarily) by deleting the gnome and orbit files owned by me in the /tmp directory.

On restarting the desktop the icons are the restored to their original settings :-)

Unfortunately this does not last indefinitely! :-(

Have you tried using KDE instead of gnome?

Try this in your ~home/.vnc/xstartup

#/bin/bash
xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
/usr/bin/startkde

No, I've not had any luck. I just gave up and figured that that's just the way it will have to be (although that's not my usual demeanor when it comes to computer-related challenges).

No, I've not tried KDE. Call it a personal thing, but I don't like the KDE desktop environment. I know, I know, lots of others prefer KDE over Gnome, but choice is what Linux is all about, right? Anyway, I don't have the same issues with my RH9 installation--the icons that I see when I'm sitting in front of my PC are the same as those presented on the desktop when I access my PC via VNC. It only seems to occur in FC2.

So, I remain puzzled. If anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears.
