Hullo All,
After a bit of a search I find that Gimp-2.6.4-fc-x86_64.rpm is available from fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/updates/9/x86_64.newkey.
When I use the 'Add/Remove Software' tool this version of Gimp isn't available.
A look at /etc/yum/repos.d shows that the fedora 9 updates repo is .../9/x86_64 (i.e. no .newkey extension).
Does one have to manually add a new entry to /etc/yum.repos.d to access .../9/x86_64.newkey via the 'Add/Remove Software' tool, or is there a way that can done automagically?
When this first occurred (August?) there was a package that was listed in the yum updates that added the newkey repos. I would imagine that through time it has disappeared. If you are just installing F9 I would advise you to skip it and go straight to F10. F9 will only have support for a few more months (April?). F10 also fixed a lot of the issues that F9 had. You can just manually change the repo file with the newkey paths (basicially copy the address from the web browser to the file.

I have been using F9 for quite a while, and will upgrade to F10 eventually.
I will try changing the repo path in /etc/yum.repos.d. I hadn't done that as I thought the key will also have changed.
I tried changing the URL in the yum.repos.d file, but it didn't have any effect. The version of Gimp available from updates is still the only offering.
Here is the version of fedora-updates.repo that I used...
All I did was change #baseurl from .../9/x86_64/
When the change didn't work I asked the 'Add/Remove Software' tool to refresh application lists, and when that didn't have any effect I did a shutdown and restart which was also to no avail.
I guess I am doing something wrong, but not sure what.
The "#" symbol means to treat that line as a comment only (it is ignored). Either the baseurl line or the mirrolist line must be # out. So in order to use it(the change you made) move the # to the mirrorlist line.

That has fixed it. I should have realised the # was a comment.
many thanks for your help.
It is always the simplest things that bite us in the butt. I had app I was trying to install that I fought for almost a week. It turned out that I had an old config file (just a different version of the same app) that was the root of the issue.

A follow-up on all this...good luck didn't prevail!
Having modified my yum-repos.d file to look at the x86_64.newkey repository, I tried to update Gimp from 2.4.5 to 2.6.4, but it threw an error saying " Public key for Gimp-2.6.4-3.fc9.x86_64.rpm was not installed".
So, in an attempt to get around this problem, I went direct to the updates newkey repository and downloaded the 2.6.4 rpms for Gimp and Gimp-libs and then did a sudo yum localupdate, which appeared to work OK except for reporting that "LD_LIBRARY_PATH /usr/local/lib64 not known", which is an entry I have in my bash.rc file.
In fact it didn't work, as attempting to run Gimp returned an error, and now I can't find my notes to see exactly what that error was.
So I thought I would try to at least get back to square 1, by removing Gimp 2.6.4 and reinstalling 2.4.5, but that process is now reporting " Public key for Gimp-libs-2.6.4-3.fc9.x86_64.rpm was not installed" even though that rpm is no longer installed, nor required.
I have rejigged my yum.repos.d file to how it was originally, and rebooted (just in case it had some effect) but continue to get the public key error when trying to install gimp-2.4.5.
I should add that the Add/Remove Software tool is still seeing Gimp-2.6.4 as available even though the newkey repo is not being looked for...maybe the update repo now has these rpms.
How do I fix this 'fine mess I've got myself into'?
there was no need to change any repos or any settings .This would have updated it / fixed it .
yum update
i just did a fresh install of 9 after finding out that 10 will never run on this old computer

Hullo John,
If I understand it correctly, yum update will update every installed application. Not something that I have the bandwidth or download capacity to do.
Also if I no longer have Gimp installed, how is this going to help?
What I need is advice re the public key issue.

I'm afraid that has got me into some 'trubble', as a new GPG public key is required. Simply editing the yum-repos.d/fedora-updates.repo to change the baseurl without changing the GPGkey or importing the new key would appear to be the basic problem.
You will see a description of the problem from my other most recent posting on this.
I am guessing, but it seems to me that I need the public GPG key for the Fedora9 updates/x86_64.newkey repo to fix things...but it is nowhere to be found!
this will reinstall the repo files
and the -newkey will be installed with it
also it is never a good idea to edit the mirror list by hand , in the *.repo files
that key will be auto gotten the FIRST time that you grab a package from there using yum , or yumex or package-kit

Did the yum reinstall fedora-release, and none of the files changed in /etc/yum-repos.d.
Tried to install gimp-2.6.4 and received the same error message as previously..."public key for gimp-libs-2.6.4... is not installed".
are you clicking on the gimp.rpm ( incorrect way) or are you doing this
Code:
yum install gimp
I've had no luck either way, but what is wrong with selecting the package in the 'Add/Remove Software' tool window, then selecting 'install'?
There has been some progress though, if it may be called that.
I found that gimp-2.4.6 and gimp-libs-2.4.6 were sitting in var/cache/yum/updates/packages dir, so cleaned them out. The message "Public key for gimp-libs-2.4.6...not installed" no longer appears and both 'yum install gimp' and selecting gimp in the "Add/Remove Software" window start to go off and do all the normal things, but then fail having tried all available mirrors.
Perhaps 'yum reinstall fedora-release' has left things a tad awry, as it is hard to believe that all mirrors are down at the same time. I have tried it a few times over a few hours with same result.
Not sure where to go from here.
