whats on disk 3 ????
Hey guys...
im downloading the 3 disk iso's on a 56k modem.... ive got the first 2 disks, and am 60% the way through the 3rd, but am losing patience. i was just wondering, what is actually on disk 3 ? do i need it ? i have 4 slackware disks, but only ever needed the first 2... am i wasting my time downloading disk3 ???? (i will not be using any server stuff, just a standard desktop install) |
what distro are you downloading? RH9?
If so, im not sure what exactly is on them, but I did a desktop install with no server options other than smb and i needed about 140 packages off disk 3. But, remeber RH9 is going down soon, so now mught be a good time to think about either fedora or another distro. |
If you do a typical desktop install, you will most likely not need Disk 3. After installed, you can use yum to install anything else you need...

lol, sorry yeah....im posting in the fedora forum but ya never know... lol.
yep, downloading fedora core 1. i know how to install extra stuff, its just i dont know how the install system will react IF it asks for disk 3 and i dont have it. if it will not boot im left with no perating system, and therefore No internet connection to download missing files. anyway, thanks. |

I do know that the install will tell you which CDs it needs prior to installation - after you have selected the packages to install (and IIRC, after it has already formatted your hard disks). I would assume then, that if it says you need CD3, you should be able to go back and deselect packages. The typical desktop install does not include a lot of source packages (for development and such), which I assume are mostly on CD3. |
actually, If i recall, I think I did set up some development stuff... so maybe CD3 isnt needed. But, why not have it anyway.. I know it is a PITA on dialup, but I'd rather have a happy install.
BTW, no more lucky numbers fortune in fedora? |
well... 75% through disk 3 now...
been tieing up the phone line all day. 10 hours to go !!!! lucky numbers ???? |
What's on each disk?
I can't imagine why Fedora doesn't have this posted somewhere. The "current" package list references Severn rather than Yarrow and doesn't have a per disk breakdown.
I'm sure the original poster has already finished the download (or is by now even more frustrated!) I attempted numerous installs on a friend's computer and can tell you that disc3 is not needed for minimal. Other than that, I think it has useful packages (vnc, some devel packages, languages other than English in case those are important to you.) I could go on, but you could just browse the list that I copied from the ISO images I burned: http://linux.porterfield.net/fedora/ Maybe someday I'll even post something really useful :) In the mean time, good luck to all. |
STILL downloading...
anyway, im using a winmodem, which i have to compile a new kernel module for. so i will be needed the delelopment packages (compiler and kernel source) so looks like im going to need disk 3. thanX for the help anyway. |
