What's wrong with Up2date

Up2Date Icon does not flash when updates are available.
But I can click on Icon and get new updates.
What gives?

This is a known bug. For some reason, up2date keeps getting broken.

up2date is old (it is actually ment for red hat linux, not fedora core); use YUM to update fedora core.

open a termnal and enter su to login as root, than enter yum update to update everything.

...or install yumex to have a graphical front end. It is a really nice tool:

#yum install yumex

Although I miss seeing the Red exclamation telling me I need to install updates.

I agree with you with respect to using YUM, but why would the Fedora devs include up2date in Fedora if it was meant only for Redhat?

I use Kyum personally.

As to why they left up2date in there, it's probably a legacy. Just like the prompt to sign up to RHN which does nothing unless you're a commerical RH customer.

I don't think its legacy at all. If it wasn't meant to be used in Fedora, I'm sure it would have been removed by now.

Seems to agree with me.

Seems to agree with me.

RHN is a subscribed to service, so I would not expect Fedora to use that since you have to register first before you can recieve updates.

I use FC3 as my main distro, but I have installed FC4 on a test partition and every now and again I switch across and update it to see if some of the bugs have been sorted out. My main "bugbear" (grin) in FC4 is up2date. Now I seem to be in a minority here in that I *like* up2date. - Well, what I like is the fact that I have an instant alert when new updates are available - the little red flashing thing dosn't annoy me; I am quite pleased to be informed...

However - in FC4 up2date is broken.
a) the alert icon does not work; and
b) even though you can still click on it and get the updates in the normal way, when it is downloading the relevant files the "total progress" indicator always shows 100% so you have no idea how much is left to do. Sigh...

I know that these are "known bugs". Anyone know when they are likely to be fixed?

Just as soon as I have posted this I'm going to download and try yumex.

My question:
I seem to remember reading somewhere that you can tweak the alert icon to use yumex instead of up2date (in other words you will still be alerted - but by yumex not by up2date). Is this right? If so how do you do it?

Thanks in advance

Mark

Well I've been using yum / yumex for a while now. It's OK (ish). Still not as good as synaptic (for apt-get).

Anyone know when up2date is likley to be fixed? (see my previous post...)

I notice that I have up2date on my system.

I noticed as it went by that I could turn it off if I wanted to - but did not store in my NeckTop computer how to turn it off.

How do I turn off up2date?

Ian

Desktop -> Preferences -> Sessions -> Current Session, then remove rhn-applet (or something similar).

I just started out with Fedora Core 4 and tried to use up2date (like I did back in the day ;) ), but it kept stopping and I'd have to restart it. Happened several times. So I did a search here and found that I should be using yum. OK started yum update and all is going well as we speak (or as I type anyway). Thanks for the tip, BTW.

My question is where are all those rpm's that up2date downloaded stored, cause it never finished so I figure they're just setting there taking up space.

Thanks,
MMYoung
