weird package problem....

Hey there!
I have some weird problems with my packages...
I got apt-get and synaptic, and as far as I understood, those just get me the rpm (for fedora) packages and then installs them with rpm.
That's all great...
So I have been trying to install gaim, compiled from source and made into my own rpm with checkinstall. It installs fine.

Now gaim needs gnutls, which in turn needs libtasn and libgcrypt, which needs libgpg-error.

When I get those tar balls from the faq site and compile and install them, it works fine.
I want to remove clutter on my system tho and make rpms and install those.

So, i find libgcrypt and libgpg-error on synaptic and install it.
then i ./configure, make and checkinstall libtasn to make a rpm, thats great also.
but when i try to ./configure gnutls, it wants libgcrypt, which is already installed, according to synaptic, it should be the right version, too.

rpm -ql libgcrypt shows me the .so file, rpm -qlp libgcrpyt doesnt show me anything. I added the path /usr/lib to my ld.so.config and did a ldconfig as root.

But nothing.

uninstalling libgcrypt from synaptic and trying to make my own rpm also doesn't work, when I ./configure it wants libgpg-error, which is already installed, too....

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

Christoph

From your question it isn't clear why you aren't just using synaptic or apt (or yum or up2date) to install gaim and all its dependencies automatically.

Doesn't this do the trick?
Code:
$ sudo apt-get install gaim
[If you really want to compile your own gaim, you might need to install libgcrypt-devel. The FOO-devel packages allow you to compile stuff that links to FOO.]

oh....
well...ya of course, i can install it with apt, but where is the fun in that??
The problem is that I can't get the latest version on there, for some reason. it's still an old one, so I started playing around with the source and compiling and all, just to learn it.

I played around with it tho and the problem might be with checkinstall, because when i make install it, it works fine, but when i make a rpm package with checkinstall, it wont work.

Thanks for replying!
