vsftpd

Hello.. first post.

I've installed vsftpd and after fooling around with the configuration, I now can't get [username] access. I've searched all over the internet and found some pretty good articles but none have helped.

I've tweaked the .conf file and the user_list file but still can't get anyone to login.

Can anyone help me on this? Basically, I just need ONE user to ftp into my box (for web administration purposes)

Thanks

Make sure you have configured your firewall to allow ftp connection to your computer (it is blocked by default)

Thanks
It's been configured to allow that. I was able to login the ftp server using 'anonymous' but after fooling with the configuration, I can't login with ANY name

I get the message Permission denied.

User_list

You may have two options here. By default (I could be wrong) but your vsftpd.conf uses that user_list to deny people but there is a place in the vsftpd.conf log to actually make it so the only people that can login are those that are entered into that list.

Hope that helps.

The answer to this question is yes. I found that reading the alternative man file that comes with this is better - you will find it named something like vsftpd.conf.5 and probably will be referenced in the vsftpd.conf file itself.

Not to belittle you, arichardson, but have you been logging in like this: fpt://username@ipaddress

The only reason I ask this is because my first time I thought it would work by just doing ftp://ipaddress and it doesn't.

I am using a program called SmartFTP and I enter "ftp.domain.com" and in seperate text boxes, my un/pw.

And, according to the comments in vsftpd_users (i think that's the file name ), it sates that any listed name will be denied. The un that I desire to have access isn't on that list hmmmm I may need to reinstall vsftpd and start over cause I may have gotten something outa sync maybe?

What are some good threads to learn how to uninstall a package that was installed from the source code? I didn't install vsftpd using an rpm or anything

Thanks again all
