VPNC on Fedora 8
 

Hello there,

I am using Fedora 8 and just installed Kvpnc for the KDE environment. As I l launch the application it told that Vpnc was not present! But my friends did not get this problem!

Anyone knows if vpnc is indeed present by default on Fedora 8?

do the following from a terminal window
rpm -q --all | grep vpn

Should show you which packages you have installed. How did you install kvpnc? Via rpm or yum?

If its not installed, then from the terminal window type

sudo yum install vpnc

I installed Kvpnc via rpm. I need to install a vpn client before I can connect to the internet.

Just a word of advice, I've found installing rpm's via yum help resolve or at least tell you which dependencies you're going to end up needing. So if you had "package.rpm" on y our desktop just install by "yum install ~/Desktop/package.rpm" and it will resolve and install dependencies for you. No more issues that happen with just doing "rpm -ivh ~/Desktop/package.rpm" !

I have a problem with the KDE interface on Fedora 8. I have tried installing from both the DVD and the KDE liveCD and the same problem occurs. Many commands don't respond, even the "log off" command.

Now, I am trying with the GNOME Fedora liveCD and I checked the installed packages through "rpm grep" and it does have NetworkManager-vpnc, vpnc and openvpn installed.

I am transferring the image to my laptop hard-drive right now. Let's hope everything works once the college starts the new semester. Only then would I be able to test the VPN connection.

I wonder why I am having problem on the KDE front though. I even installed it on my desktop and I got the same problems. I have to go through command line to be able to shut down my PC. I think it might be a bug or something. Anyone else experiencing the same problems?

And also the Live KDE F8 won't boot! Its says I/O error on sr1 or something like that. SR1 would be my DVD-ROM drive I suppose. I tried downloading the image again but same problem, but the MD5 checksum is alright, so no download errors!

I had the same issue on a file server I was provisioning at work. I tried F8, FC7 and both had the same sr1 error with not able to shutdown properly. I ended up either putting in FC6 or FC4 and the installation worked. It still never shut down properly.
