visioneer 5800 scanner not working in fedora

I have a visioneer 5800 usb scanner attached to my system but I can't get fedora to scan images. It shows in the hardware browser under system devices but not under capture devices. The only thing showing under capture devices is a Bt878 capture device. I think that is my ati wonder ve card. It also shows up under system devices as an audio capture device.

How can I use the scanner?

I also have an unknow device listed under system devices and was wondering how to determine what it is?

I also ran sane-find-scanner and also scanimage -L and these are the results I get...

$ sane-find-scanner

# No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
# you have loaded a SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

found USB scanner (vendor=0x0545, product=0x810a) at libusb:001:004
found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a7, product=0x0226) at libusb:001:003
# Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by
# SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.

# Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports can't be
# detected by this program.

# You may want to run this program as root to find all devices. Once you
# found the scanner devices, be sure to adjust access permissions as
# necessary.
[jadrian@localhost jadrian]$ scanimage -L
device `v4l:/dev/video0' is a Noname BT878 video (ATI TV-Wonder VE) virtual device

In - SANE problems with 878 TV card

I had the exact same problem - the virtual driver seems to take presidence over the scanner even though the sane-config command does seem to find the scanner.
Has anyone has found a solution to this problem ?

My usb scanner works well if I disconnect the usb cable and reconnect it. I have had this problem since FC2 and now in FC3 . Yes, I have seen through Google where some people have had success by adjusting the permissions for the scanner. I only use my scanner about once a month so, it is more trouble to adjust the permissions than just unpluging the usb cable and reconnecting it. If someone know a simple fix for this issue please post it. This issue is annoying to say the least. I believe this issue affects the majority of usb scanners and I am guessing your scanner is usb also.

As always your mileage may vary
