Viewing installed software in yum.

I recently decided to give the Fedora 16 KDE spin a try after reading good things about it. I am coming from Arch and rather like that pacman tells me which packages are already installed on my system when I run:

#pacman -Ss keyword

I was wondering if there is any way to make yum tell me which packages are already installed when I run something like:

#yum search keyword

There probably is a yum based command to do that. But on any rpm based distro you can search for installed packages with:

# rpm -qa | grep keyword

rpm -qa lists all installed packages and piping that output to a grep search accomplishes what you want.

This will give you the information you are seeking ..

yum info package-name

This will tell you whether it is installed or it is available in the repository. The downside is it will not display packages installed manually (without using yum). The man page gives more information as John VV has indicated.
