Very Weird Sound Problem....Permissions?

Hello all.

I have a very peculiar sound problem on my machine. Some programs will not work with sound support unless I am root. A few of them are CannonSmash, TuxRacer and KAlarm. If I have a terminal window open in Gnome and I type in csmash, it will work with no sound....however, if I su and then type it in so I am root, the sound works perfectly...Tuxracer, sometimes the sound works but lags 3 seconds behind the video and sometimes it won't come on....if I am root none of that happens, works perfectly....Kalarm, sounds won't work at all unless I run it as root.

I am running a...

3 GHZ P4 with HyperThreading
768 MB RAM
160 GB HD
NVidia GeForce FX 5200
Under Sound Card Detection my sound card comes up as Intel Corp. 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller with Module: snd-intel8x0
I don't know what other specs u might need, post if u need more

Oh, almost forgot, I am running Fedora Core 2.

Anyways, any help would be greatly appreciated. TTY all L.

I too have some similar problem with FC1 at home and at office. Hardware doesn seem to make a difference, in both cases FC1 recognised sound card and set them up during installation. And the installation type was Personal Desktop.

The problem is this, If I start up as root, when I start up KDE I can hear sound during initialisation and all system notifications. Any MM application using aRts driver will fail to produce/initialise sound card. But if choose OSS drivers in the same applications 9 xmms, xine, mplayer), I get the sound. Once the sound has started, one can get sound with aRts drivers and system notifications.

The problem desn occur if you are root.
