I'm a newbie to linux.
I'm reading "Linux for Dummies" and have installed Fedora on a second HD so I have a duel boot , win XP pro and Fedora.
I really like Fedora. I have had no problem getting things to work on it.
I first tried linux using the knoppix live cd and then a HD install of knoppix/debian.
I could not get my usb camera to work on debian, but everything works great so far on Fedora.
I used firebird with winXP and would like to give it a try on Fedora.
I downloaded it off of the mozilla.org website.
Then I extracted the file.
I now have a folder called MozillaFirebird with a lot of other file and folders in it.
Your already there where the MozillaFirebird directory is where the executable is just choose run and enter /path/to/MozillaFirebird/MozillaFirebird in other words if you extracted the file to your users name: /home/user/MozillaFirebird/MozillaFirebird
You can also use apt to maintain your packages. It works very good! Search for apt+rpm+fedora. If you add repositories to your apt sources.list a simple:
apt-get install mozilla-firebird will do
It's easier then fiddling with tar.gz files and you reduce the chance of broken packages or missing dependencies. Good luck!
How do I let my other users run Firebird.
I have created a log in for my wife and son.
I would like them to be able to run Firebird once they log into there account.
I created a icon on my desktop with the comand: /home/user/MozillaFirebird/MozillaFirebird with "user" being my log in name
Do I need to extract firebird to each /home/user account or can I share it some how?
Move the whole MozillaFirebird directory to somewhere like /opt. If it is in your home directory then other people won't be able to see it due to permissions. You will probably have to change the permissions for the /opt/MozillaFirebird as well so everyone can see it. Then you just have to provide everybody a link to it. You should be able to just move the whole directory with no problem, but it may affect any plugins you have installed. Good luck.
Well I was working on moving it to /opt just before I read your post, but I could not move it.
Guess why, I was not doing it from root, but from my user account.
From root I had no problem moving it.
I created a icon on the other user desktop, but when I would click it I would get the "create profile" box. I would create profile and click start Firebird.
The profile box would go away and Firebird would not start.
After checking to see if I had the permissions for the /opt/MozillaFirebird set right I gave it a couple more tries but could not get it to start.
So then I went back in as root and deleted the /opt/MozillaFirebird
Then I went to were I downloaded the MozillaFirebird package and extracted the file to /opt
Then I was able to make everyone a link to it from there desktop like I tried to do before, but this time it work
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
You have all been a great help in getting my favorite browser working with my new OS
Yeah, since you installed it in your user directory to begin with the permissions were set fro you only. Have you checked out Opera wb? It will work with some of those sites that mozilla or firebird wont.
