Using alsa with headphones

I have just set up my video card using alsa and the snd-atiixp driver. Everything works great except for one quirk. If I plug in a set of headphones, sound is still played through the other speakers on top of the headphones. I found that opening alsamixer and physically muting the master seems to do the job and I only get sound from the headphones. This is extremely tedious and I am wondering if there is a better way? Can you do something to help fedora realize that the headphones are being used and to mute/unmute the master accordingly? Thanks in advance.

I get this on my HP zx5000 notebook with snd-atiixp and headphones too. It would appear that there is a switch behind the headphone port that the Windows driver monitors that snd-atiixp doesn't. I currently trying to find out how to get this behaviour to happen on Windows so I can control the two outlets independently.
