boot from the install CD, then make the changes and reboot. if fedora doesn't let you boot from your install disc, get a copy of knoppix, mount the filesystem with xorg.conf on it and make the changes that way.

it doesn't seem like changing xorg.conf would cause your OS not to boot, though. did you change anything else?

another thought is that it's actually booting okay, but what you mean is that it's stalling out while trying to get to X. if that's the case, do ctrl+alt+F2 or F3 when it stalls, and you'll be brought to a console. enter your user name and password, then make the changes to xorg.conf. then you should be able to get into X.

I might be doing something wrong, tried CTRL+ALT+F2 or F3, it goes to a black screen and nothing else, when I press CTRL+ALT+F1 it goes back.

sorry if I'm asking this stupid question, but I'm just a newbie

it sounds like it would just be easier to try the first suggestion, to boot to install cd or knoppix and change the file back to what it was. no telling what framebuffer or video issues or whatever you might be having that are preventing you from getting to a console. so i would recommend you try that, and post back if it doesn't work.

ok, as I fixed everything I'll be giving Nvidia 3D Accelerator another chance.

Done a backup of xorg.conf, edited xorg.conf to work with the Driver, now I should restart X, any advice how I should do this please?

May be you should try FC4 ?. Its more compatible with systems, and by the way, if somebody knows how to fix it. Why nvidia driver loads slower than factory "nv" ? I must wait for a 10 secs approximately then nvidia screen comes, and system continues booting, may be I should turn off some "loads"? I use latest drivers from nvidia.com. Anyone met this problem? ThanX

[root@localhost chris]# init 5
bash: init: command not found

ERROR: You appear to be running an X server; please exit X before installing. For further details, please see the section INSTALLING THE NVIDIA DRIVER in the README available on the Linux driver download page at www.nvidia.com.

How do I exit X server?

When doing CTRL+ALT+BackSpace it logs out and when login back I still get the error to exit X.

I'm dumb and don't have any clue what I'm doing :/

When installing the nvidia driver, you need to do "init 3" as root to stop the xserver and then "init 5" to start the xserver after installing the drivers.

what redazz said. you could also change your /etc/inittab to runlevel 3 so you could boot directly to a console and not have to deal with X until it was configured right.

change:
id:5:initdefault:

to:
id:3:initdefault:

then depending on what desktop you're using, you would just add a line to ~/.xinitrc and launch your desktop by typing startx.
