Upgrading Fedora from 12 to 16 using preupgrade, cannot finish after download
After composing this question in emacs, I looked at "Similar Threads" which suggest I should do a complete install of Fedora 16 rather than trying to continue with what I have done already but I will ask my question anyway, just in case.
I have Fedora 12 and Windows on a dual boot PC, and want to uprgrade Linux to Fedora 16.
I followed the notes for preupgrade at: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_use_PreUpgrade
and successfully downloaded and verified Fedora 16, but then I am stuck after "Upgrade does not install upon reboot"
This is part of my Grub menu.lst file, I have omitted the early comments and the later entry for Windows. Following the listing is an account of my dilemma.
title GNU GRUB 2, (1.98)
title Upgrade to Fedora 16 (Verne)
kernel /upgrade/vmlinuz preupgrade repo=hd::/var/cache/yum/preupgrade ks=hd:UUID=9e124fe7-a7ba-4302-9ada-7bb852044162:/upgrade/ks.cfg stage2=http://mirror01.th.ifl.net/fedora/linux/releases/16/Fedora/i386/os/images/stage2.img
title Fedora (126.96.36.199-175.fc12.i686)

1) The notes for preupgrade at: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_use_PreUpgrade
say that I should "Identify the drive and partition of your Fedora /boot folder". I do not know how to do this.
2) If I boot up with "title GNU GRUB 2, (1.98)" I get into a command window for grub, and I have no idea how to go from there
3) If I boot up with "title Upgrade to Fedora 16 (Verne)"I get a curse type window with a dialogue box that asks first which drive I want to use, I answer "hard disk", then goes on to ask "What partition and drive on that partition holds an installation tree for Fedora?" Again I have no idea what this means.
I am lost in all three of these, can someone please help me to complete the installaton of Fedora 16?
Or must I do a re-install of 16?
12 to 16 is unlikely to be problem free.
Better use the f17 dvd
simply delete all of F12 except /home and do a fresh install
Thank you for the advice, I will do a fresh install of 16 or 17, after a bit more research.
that is the EXPECTED out come of trying to " upgrade" from 12 to 16 or 17
it will not work
Thanks John VV, that was my experience, but being of an inquiring mind -- why will it not work?
for a lot of reasons
the main one is that fedora changes SO MUCH from one to the next version
so many changes that fedora 17 is not even in the same spices group as fedora 12 was
the partition format changed from ext2 for /boot to ext4 for /boot
the default OS partition format changed from ext3 to ext4
the size of the /boot partition for "preupgrade ingresses on every release
a 1 to 1.5 gig( yes GIG ) /boot partition is a good idea and not the 100 meg /boot partition
the default desktop moved from gnome 2 to gnome 3
so NONE of the config files in the ~/ folder will transfer
for nvidia hardware
the default driver went from the 2d ONLY NV to the 3d open source nouveau driver
you might want to read the fedora release notes on the changes
as is just going from 16 to 17 might be a challenge
and last fedora 17
Thank you John VV for that very useful and enlightening answer. It leaves me a bit overwhelmed, I have, there is, an awful lot to learn, but at least it is all open and available, and there is a lot of people happy and willing to help, thank you again.
