upgrading FC3
 

*newbie here*

first off yes I know FC4 is out but i want to go thru an upgrade process. clean installs are (relatively speaking) cake. upgrades are where you run into problems and learn a lot more

so i run up2date and select all packages, and i got this:

i assum this means "you need to upgrade your kernel first before you upgrade all this other stuff" so i ran up2date again, but this time only selected the 3 packages related to the kernel (kernel, docs, and utils (?) )

then i got this:

are updates for the kernel of FC3 no longer available ? is there another locaiton i should be telling up2date to look in ? if so, how do i change that ?

For newbies your better off downloading cds and doing an upgrade, but to experiment follow this religously http://www.brandonhutchinson.com/Upg..._with_yum.html .. up2date will not be able to upgrade to fc4, you will need to use yum which up2date uses. It's very easy to mess up your system completely while doing this so be very carefull, Research the steps you arn't sure about doing and post here for more help

You don't really need to upgrade the kernel first. The packages you need to install first are yum and fedora-release. After that you can just "yum upgrade" everything or only the packages you need.

sorry for not clarifying. i do not want to upgrade to FC4. I just want to upgrade my FC3 installation to the latest and greatest. Also i guess i should have clarified that I am using the GUI up2date as in i clicked the red exclamation point.

looks like i made some progress, though. i unchecked one of the channels that up2date uses and it seems to be getting further but now it's just kinda spinning it's wheels. maybe the update server is too busy during the day ?

ok scratch that....got another "not found" error but for a different package this time. any suggestions ? is up2date just timing out because of high traffic ?

To upgrade to the latest FC3 packages, just run "yum upgrade" a root.

ok it took all night but yes that worked a LOT better than the GUI up2date. thanks for the post.

but the red exclamation point is still there. i clikced it and the list is WAAAAAY smaller than before, so it looks like a ton of stuff got updated. should i just run yum update again ?

Yeah, you could try to run "yum upgrade" again.

This happens from time to time. I don't know the reason.

My guess is that the rhn repositories are in the process of being updated while the fedora YUM repositories haven't been mirrored.

Try again the 'yum update' or the 'up2date' later today or maybe tomorrow. That's always gotten rid of the blinking alert notifier for me.

thanks for the posts everyone. ran yum update again (on the MUCH shorter list of packages) and everything worked well. still had the notifier, so i ran yum update a 3rd time. yum update said "no packages marked for update" but the notifier is still there, so i'll take the advice and wait a while and try again.

in the meantime, anyone got a link to a good article describing yum update versus up2date and how all these mirrors and stuff works ? i've read the man pages for both commands but i'm still kinda scratching my head.

You have to select the packages to update. That message indicates that you did not 'selected' any of the packages due for update.

When in up2date you are presented with a list of packages to update, check the "Select all" check mark.

I tried updating right now with YUM and it did not pick the perl and zlib updates that up2date is showing, so I ran up2date, selected all packages and the notifier stopped blinking.

To be honest, you don't really need the notifier running all the time (unless your paranoid about security, or want the latest and greatest). Running yum update once a month is better. To turn it off the notifier:
1; open "system-config-services", (you need to enter the root password)
2; de-select rhnsd (nothing else)
3; select save
4: exit system-config-services
5; then just remove the notifier icon on the panel.

But this mightn't be for you (ie. you mightn't feel like doing this, it's optional). But just so you know.
