Upgrade from FC6 to FC9 to FC10 to FC11 breaks news server login
 

I was using nzbget on FC6 just fine. Then I changed to a box that had been running FC9, and had then been upgraded to FC10 and then FC11.
Recently, I tried to get a new news server. But now nzbget can't log onto the server. I tried two different (pay) server companies. They tested my login and password, and they work for them, but when I try to login on my end, I get authentication errors (bad username/password). I get the same result on both servers, and the last time I used an NSP was when I was running FC6, so I conclude that the problem was created when I upgraded Fedora, somewhere between versions 6 and 11.
Any ideas for what to fix?

Have you tried importing the settings and application from the old box to the new or even running the server in a virtual machine?

The news server is running on the NSP's machines, not mine.
The only application is nzbget, which was copied over from the old installation.
The settings are in the .nzbget config file, which was also copied over. I can log on to the NSP using the Fedora 6 box, so I know the userid/password works. The only difference is that on the Fedora 11 box, I get authentication errors from the news server.

I therefore conclude that something was hosed by the upgrade itself.

there have been SO MANY CHANGES from fedora 6 to 11 that i would be surprised IF IT WORKED .

Why on earth would any company run a fedora server with it's 13 month life cycle
upgrading or --the BEST way -- fresh install - every 6 months when a new version comes out .
bugs ARE not fixed from one version to the next ( or are fixed after the first 3 months )

You misunderstand.
I am not running a news server. I'm just running a client, and trying to access a pay news server. Nonetheless, I think I'll do a fresh install of FC11, to address some other issues, and it may solve this one as well.

I tried a fresh install of FC 11. That hosed it up so I couldn't even enter my ISP information in the network config tool. So I went back to the old installation.

I have nzbget working on FC 6 right now. I copied the binary to the box running FC 11, along with the libssl and libcrypto library versions that are running on the FC 6 box, without which this build of nzbget won't run. When put onto the FC 11 box, the NSP server still gives me authentication errors. Also, I built nzbget 0.7.0 (the latest version), and tried that, and the auth errors persist. At this point I don't think the problem is the nzbget program, but what else could it possibly be? I hope someone at LQ can give me some clues.

You CANNOT move binaries built for one version to another and expect them to work(especially jumping that many versions). At the very least you would need the versions of the dependencies that were built for that specific version.

Most people are probably using Pan or Klibido to grab their nzb stuff.

It DID work, after installing older versions of 2 libraries (libssl and libcrypto).
But just like the version compiled on the later version of the OS, the old version
got auth errors from the NSP.

I tried pan, but it barfed with a bunch of "article not found" errros, which I took to mean that it couldn't get past thej authentication either.

I have a suspicion that it could be the firewall rules on the new Fedora box. Could the firewall be blocking the authentication messages without blocking the attempt to connect to the server in general?

Usually the article not found error means just that(pan). It will normally give you an authentication failure or connection refused error if that is the issue. Which news server are you connecting to?

I tried two different NSPs, and both gave me auth errors, so I don't think which server matters.

Most news servers limit the number of connection you open simultaneously. If pan attempts to open more than that(it will open as many as it is set to), it will sometimes give odd errors.

The server will allow me several connections (10, I think), and pan is set to one connection, so that's not it.
