Update error - not enough space or new math?

I just built a VMWare VM from the Fedora 13 DVD - 64 bit. It now wants to do 385 updates so I let it download all of the rpms. As it starts to do the install I get a Transaction Error to the effect
Quote:
Test Transaction Errors: installing package kernel-2.6.34.6-47.fc13.x86_64 needs 8MB on the /boot filesystem
System monitor shows that I have 19.7 MiB available on /boot - so what is going on???

TIA,

Ken

If you made your /boot partition (if separate at all) *that* small that it now only has 19.7 MiB left then you have disregarded Fedora partition size suggestions in the first place, right? And what is going on doesn't really matter in the end as you've get to get out of this problem, right? So either resize (for once LVM comes in handy) or see if dividing upgrades in chunks of say kernel+glibc, core utils, Xorg+eyecandy, the rest works for you.

Thanks unSpawn, however, I did not decide on the size. I allowed the VMWare install to take all the defaults from the Fedora DVD. I have no idea why it made /boot so small. I am currently in the process of doing a "manual" install - which chose 500 MB for /boot by default. I will see what happens when I try to install the updates.

Well, the manual install did not bother to install networking so it gets one more try. After that I will probably loose interest in Fedora (have not used it since about v5) and stick with Ubuntu.

Ken

Well, this time it refuses to add the updates repository - time to give Fedora a suppository.

Fedora 13 - usb install - no issues
Fedora 13 - KVM / Qemu - no issues
Fedora 13 - hard drive install - no issues.

Just my 2c.

Odd. "For Fedora 13 the default /boot partition size was increased to 500 MiB to avoid (..) problems in the future." [1] but "The partition mounted on /boot/ contains the operating system kernel (which allows your system to boot Fedora), along with files used during the bootstrap process. For most users, a 250 MB boot partition is sufficient." [2].

How is that fedora's fault ?

I've just reinstalled a default F13 on KVM and my boot partition is 485MB, out of which 28MB is taken. Running yum update I get over 500 files to be updated, of which the kernel is 22MB. But then presto kicks in and reduces the download size to about 350MB. The transaction test passed ok, so I'm waiting to see what happens.

Well the update just finished and there were no errors. The kernel was updated, it went from 2.6.33.3-85.fc13.x86_64 to 2.6.34.6-47.fc13.x86_64

The /boot partition usage is now 46MB.

I suspect vmware.

Nope this is a Fedora "feature".
It's not actually required at F13 IIRC, but is documented as being so in future. Blame pre-upgrade; seems they're using that "design" (for want of a better word) in future.
