uninstall gnome then install xfce - lost menu and many apps???

Hi

Installed Fedora Core 8 from liveCD.

GNOME was installed as the Desktop.

I uninstalled gnome-desktop then installed xfdesktop.

I have now lost all the nice apps (LVM GUI, control panel, YUM GUI etc) from the "main menu", infact I dont even have a menu now in xfce.

How do i get a reasonable XFCE desktop with a menu on the panel!!!

??

thanks in advance.

While I'm not familiar with Fedora, I suspect that many of the applications you were expecting are actually part of the gnome-desktop package. GNOME is huge, full of all sorts of useful applications (that are still useful even if you're running a different desktop).

I suggest you reinstall gnome-desktop. You can have multiple desktop environments installed at the same time. The only one which will actually run is the one you specify in the "sessions" option before you log in.

BRILLIANT!!

yes, that worked.

also, deleting
./config
./gnome*
./gconf*

also fixed it.

sjledet Fedora requires some of Gnome to be installed in order to work correctly even if using KDE or xfce

What if I just need a shell

OK. I realize maybe Fedora needs Gnome. But I already uninstalled it. Does anyone know how to have the console boot to a login prompt?

this is controlled by GDM for gnome ( fedora default) or KDM , for kde
IF xfce is installed ( i don't use it) it should use that
with no gui it auto defaults to text
-----------
but i take it all you have is text only( run level 3) type in "your user name," or "root" and the user password or root password
