Unable to set remote font server with xset

Hello,

I recently did a clean install of Fedora 11 (from Fedora 10). In Fedora 9 and 10 I used a remote font server so that I could launch HP OpenView over a VPN tunnel. The procedure would go something like this:

*connect to VPN

*xset +fp tcp/<hp_ux_server>:7000

*ssh -X user@hp_ux_server

*launch OpenView

OpenView requires the fonts that are installed on the HP-UX server, hence the need for the xset command.

Now since the installation of Fedora 11, I cannot get the xset command to work.

xset fp+ tcp/<hp_ux_server>:7000
xset: bad font path element (#23), possible causes are:
Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions
Directory missing fonts.dir
Incorrect font server address or syntax

I have turned off the firewall to make sure it wasn't blocking the request. But to no avail. I have also had two other people with Fedora 11 machines try this... they get the same error.

Were there major changes in the X server from Fedora 10 to 11+? Does anyone know how to get around this problem...whether it be to get xset working or by doing it another way?

I am willing to provide any feedback to assist. Thank you in advance!

I found that I need an IP address or a FQDN (fully qualified domain name).

xset fp+ tcp/192.168.168.3:7000
xset fp+ tcp/host.mydomain.com:7000

Just tcp/host:7000 gave the bad font path message

I have tried that just now, with the same error. Can I ask which distribution and release you are using? I have not been able to find anyone with Fedora 11+ that has this working.

Thanks!

Ubuntu 9.10

As a baseline test can you telnet to the fontserver?
I.e. telnet <host-w-fontserver> 7000 from the remote machine.
Also from the fontserver host itself?
You won't see anything but it should connect.

Yes, I can accomplish that. I have even tested connecting to the font server with OS X (X11.app) and it works just fine. It is just in the X.org implementation in Fedora 11+ that seems to be having difficulty.
