Two problems after changing the kernel

I recently compiled and installed a kernel 2.6.36 in the place of an older kernel, but one of the two problems that came up was that during the boot process a message similar to
Quote:
fs Usbdevfs cannot be mounted
shows up.

I guess that means that no usb device should be working in the newer kernel, however I am here writing this using my usb keyboard and my usb mouse, so what that could mean?

The other is this message:
Quote:
Applying iptables firewall rules: iptables-restore: line 20 failed"
that comes up during the boot or when I try to start the service through
Quote:
sbin/service iptables --full-restart
That happens only with the new kernel 2.6.36.3 that I recently compiled and installed.

So I searched for files with
Quote:
find / -name *iptables*
and the only thing that came were the initialization scripts from rc2.d to rc5.d.

I then gave a look into rc5.d and the 20th line was a blank line.

So were I should look for the 20th line? Or anything else that I can do localize the problem?

Thanks for the help

Which Linux do you have? You probably missed few things in your kernel config, so the 2 things you mentioned are missing or partially missing, kernel compilation isn't a trivial task it takes time and patience one can't do it in a hurry. I suggest to go through again and just look for those 2 things and recompile the kernel again. By the way why using 2.6.36? The current stable version is 3.2.8.

Regards

Good point. After I read this I had the idea of using make oldconfig to see if this would avoid these problems by keeping the old configurations, but some problems arose that keep me away from using "make oldconfig", so if I cannot fix them, I will probably open a new thread in another section

Anyway, I was looking for a kernel that supported ext4, and this was one of the first to support it, so I thought that there would be smaller chances that it required a newer library to compile than one that I had. I don't care for the current stable version, unless I know a difference that can be beneficial for me.

Instead of using oldconfig copy your current config and open it in the kernel edition program.
Code:
make menuconfig
and then you load your working config there.

I did what I said and changed nothing. I suspect that make menuconfig already was using the config file from the distro, searched /boot and found the old config file.

Anyway I may have found out the problem behind the iptables message warning: I am using a version older than the minimum required by the 2.6.36 kernel. Based on that I already configured and compiled a newer version from iptables, but I am afraid that if I issue a "make install" it may conflict with the older version, or there isn't any problem?

Besides that I still have no idea about the possible usb problem
