trouble format USB hard drive

I have a 20Gb USB hard drive that I am using to back up my family's data before Installing MEPIS on their computers, and I cannot seem to format it right. I am trying to format this USB hard drive and put a FAT32 partition on it, but fdisk never seems to write the partition correctly. It has an error about not being able to read the partition table after writing it.

The only way I've found to format a USB HD is using Partition Magic. fdisk wouldn't even let me select FAT32. PM did it in no time at all.

Are you going to be backing up from windows prior to installing Mepis? If so, just hook it up and format it under win as FAT32. Also you can try qtparted under linux, which also comes with System Rescue CD
