Touchpad Won't Work As PS/2

I'm trying to get the Alps touchpad on my laptop to work but nothing seems to. The odd thing is that it doesn't even work as PS/2, which I was under the impression was supposed to be a pretty good fallback for touchpads. The touchpad works under other distros like Mandrake 10.0 and most live CD's - Knoppix, System Rescue, etc. but not Ubuntu. Is there any simple way (ie: not the Synaptics driver) to get an Alps touchpad working in FC3. I'm not looking for any of the fancy features like scrolling with the touchpad or anything like that. I just don't want to have to plug my USB mouse in everytime I boot into Linux.

That one little Grub option did it. Coincidentally, I have the same laptop that the author of that web page has. Thanks for the link.

I've got the same laptop as well

You may be interested to know there is a dedicated mailing list for running Linux on the Presario R3000 (and the similar HP model). You can join or read the archives here:
http://mail.kdewebdev.org/mailman/listinfo/linuxr3000

Also, I want to point out that the solution in the link I posted is not specific to FC3, it also works on Gentoo for me. It certainly saves a bunch of time messing with the synaptics drivers which are very difficult to get configured in xorg.conf. With this command line option (what the hell does it do anyway?) your touchpad magically turns into a ps2 mouse. The only negative is that the scroll feature doesn't work, but I can live with it
