Thinking about giving it a try but...
 

All i've seen and heard have been bad things. Broken packages, incompatibilies. What gives?

Doesn't sound like Fedora will go all that far - being the 'left overs' of a once decently useable distro (RH).

What are your thoughts?

Don't go by what others say, go ahead and try it. What do you have to lose, maybe a little time spent on it, that's all. If you don't like it, just remove it and install something else.

well,..what can i say? i like it. its better than RH9.
-quite stable (so far)...my pc is faster after the upgrade (dont know why)
-wine is working ver well (no defunct process)
-i can rip cd now (without pain).
-nice booting process (details)

i agree with mr. moderator..TRY IT!

as the moderator said, the best thing to do is to go ahead and try it out for yourself and draw your own conclusions and opinions...


here's the humble opinion i drew:

it's only a "1.0" version... some issues were to be expected... but YES, it DID (or does) have more bugs than anyone would have wanted in a "release"...

i think one could say that fedora had a "rough start", technically speaking... plus the whole controversy and FUD about red hat linux (product) becoming fedora core (project) and all all the implications that come with that...

words like "PROVING GROUND" still keep me tossing in bed sometimes... LOL

i checked it out for a few days... it DOES work... it IS usable... it LOOKS SWEET... but it was way too buggy IMHO... there's no way i could "trust" it yet... and i'm one that really loves red hat 9.0...

i made the very difficult decision to stop using rh9 when i heard it wouldn't be supported after a few months... it sucks that red hat isn't among the distros i use anymore (now mostly debian, mandrake, and slackware), but well, life goes on...

i will, however, definitely give the next fedora point release a spin as soon as it comes out...

even though i respectfully disapprove of red hat allowing such buggy code to be released into the wild, i think this buggy 1.0 is a good test for the fedora developer's abilities... i'm anxious to see what the fedora community is capable of doing... hell, i'm anxious to see where the whole fedora project is going in general...

i don't believe that fedora is anywhere near ready to become a viable alternative to red hat linux yet... and who knows - it might remain an "always-beta" deal, because of this "proving ground" nature... there's an awful lot of "mights" floating around... time will tell...

i think that, for now, companies using red hat linux on important systems that can't move up to red hat enterprise linux should move to another well-established distro instead of going for fedora core 1.0...

but i think that home users should definitely try it if they want to (although it wouldn't be such a bad idea to wait for 1.x) and determine themselves wheather or not it suits them...

I agree, I use RH9 at work and am currently looking at enterprise linux. Fedora is nothing I will be trusting in a production environment anytime soon. However, I also dont feel as though I would like to pay for what i can get for free.... so, maybe slack will be my final choice.

Everyone who posts a comment that it's buggy should also say that "Your Mileage May Vary". I've been using it for a few weeks, and I've had absolutely no problems with it.

Go ahead, give it a try...you may just like it. And if you do have problems, that's what this forum is for...
