Maybe I missed it, but I think that noobs should turn off all their unecessary services, its in some settings menu with GNOME. Go to the start menu then settings and it is under server settings I think. I wish I had FC1 with me to check

Turn off all the things you don't need, it'll make your system run faster. I dont need networking so I turned it off. It made me boot about 1 minute faster

I actually came to fedora from Mepis.
The mepis/debian/unstable repository madness brought me to Fedora.
I broke my system 3-4 times trying to install kde 3.2.
Tools like redcarpet and yum have made sure my system just "works"

How do I use apt-get? Bash doesn't recognize the command, and I thought it was only for debian. Is there a way to use it in Fedora?

Did you download the two apt RPMs from freshrpms.net?

Just a fyi,

Rather than booting to different runlevels, as suggested for the nvidia driver install, I am able to <ctl><alt><f1> to tty1, and do:
telinit 3
This shuts down the xwindow server. I am able to install the nvidia driver and it doesn't complain. You can then vi your XF86Config-4 and change nv to nvidia as the installer suggests. Then just do:
telinit 5
This will automagically start the xserver, and you should see a nice nividia splash, just like I do!

I've done this several (dozen?) times with no ill effects. I'm currently running Mandrake 9.1, but I am downloading Fedora FC2 test2 as I type this.

I hate to boot when I don't have to. Comes from years of Windows software installs/resolution tweaks/any other senseless reason to reboot.

Dan

Fedora to-do's

In Fedora there is no "dialup" support like in Windows, I need to get online so I can fix all the stuff in Fedora, but I download the files needed onto my Windows Partition and copy them onto my Linux partition, is this safe? none of the downloads work, one of them did and that was a a kernel to mount NTFS partition? if anyone could help me I need it I have to do stuff for class on a Linux machine, but I can't get online????? I apologize for the long post.

TO frank drebin.
I followed you nvidia install guide, but when i got to the driver installation part it says that my kernel isn't properly compiledę.
What do I do now
ps. I use Mandrake 10.0 which i believe is using kernel 2.6

ok, in Mandrake 10 you need to use the mandrake Control Center and install the Kernel Source from the CD. It will work then.
Make sure you have the 5336 version ov Nvidia or it won't work with 2.6 kernel
