The best FC release for an old machine ?

I've a spare machine, 500Hz, 160Mb RAM and 20Gb HD. It already has RH 9.0 installed. I was wondering which would be the most advisable version of Fedora Core to install over it ?

Thanks.

well.. the newest... it's not what vesion you run, it's what software you run on it. e.g. don't run gnome or KDE and you'll be fine.

Ideally I want to run Fluxbox and sometimes KDE. I know the latter would be a resource hog but KDE / Gnome on my RH 9 seem to be running at more than acceptable levels and don't slow me down too much. Is there any reason why they shouldn't work equally as well in FC2+ ?

rh9 shipped with kde v2 and gnome v1 I think. they've got bigger and fatter since then, but even fc2 had kde 3 and gnome 2 i (also) think. in gnome you can disable nautilus etc... to claw back resources. as for KDE, my preferred way is to uninstall it.

I think you'll be fine dude...

I built my mother a machine - why? - because she has no idea how to use a computer and wanted something to start with. It's an 800 MHZ AMD Duron Mobile + 40 GB Hdd + 256 MB Ram. (new parts i got last winter for really really really cheap at newegg.com - whole machine with LCD monitor, keyboard, etc, came to about 300 bucks)

It's nothing flashy.

It runs Fedora Core 5 with Gnome and flies just like anything else does. It's slower than my Athlon 3200 when encoding music or movies, but for daily desktop applications like Open Office / Email / Web browsing, it's just as quick as anything else. The OS will not kill the machine, believe me. If anything, Linux is the best thing for an old machine.
