super tiny font at FC2 login screen
 

I have an odd situation with the X login screen. A fresh install of FC2 produced a login screen with "super tiny font" such that it is hardly readable. It's only my familiarity with the icons, which are normal sized, that would, for example, allow me to click on the "reboot" icon.

The funny thing is that all the font after logging in is o.k., but during bootup, it also is way too small, i.e., the little messages that Fedora gives you if you opt for not seeing the details, like, "setting up disks" or whatever it is...

Anybody have any ideas on how to change this font? Or better yet, why a default install would produce this situation? FC1 never had that problem.

this is the night of the "me too" posts for me.

i had this problem in FC1. the login screen basically had no fonts displayed, only icons. when i logged in as a user, the desktop was the same, all icons, no fonts. if i logged in as root, everything was fine.

i think i actually tracked this problem down. i believe if you do some gnome package updates using up2date, they are required to be done without or at least before updating other packages. i found this out because there was a release note on one of the packages in question. it said you should update this package on its own.

I wonder if someone has figured this issue out. I replaced Mandrake 10 with FC2 tonight, and I'm enjoying trying it out. (Feels a little clunky - but maybe its just my lack of familiarity with it)

I too have the mega-tiny fonts on the login screen - I just had to guess what to do there. The icons are normal, the fonts are so small they just look like periods .....

Can anyone offer any advice?

I actually ended up reinstalling FC2, doing a "yum -y update" and the problem went away.

OK, I reinstalled, and the problem went away.

This is something that is very strange about Linux installations that I not experienced while installing Windows repeatedly since the original Windows 95: from one installation to another, using the exact same media, you never know what the PC is going to do. Will it detect my hardware? No? Reinstall. No this time? Try again. Hey! This time it did! And you have no idea why it did or did not. Sometimes things work, and sometimes they don't.

Windows 95 was like that when it first came out. Install it and watch the system hang. Install it again, this time it won't even get halfway through. Install a third time and it appears to work, and then you try to boot and it hangs. Try it the fourth time, and it works.

Specifically, this time, I installed KDE and a bunch of development stuff I stupidly left out last time. Let's hope this installation is the one. I'd rather not do that again for a while.
