Stuck in Runlevel 3

I changed my inittab to 3 Default and now I can't change it back. I tried telinit 5 and init 5 but getting a command not found error. I figure there's a way to just edit inittab while in 3 but I don't know how

You do it the same way as you would if you were in runlevel 5 - using a text editor. The only difference here is you have to use a console based one. Try "nano", "pico" or "vi" (nano/pico are probably easier to use than vi, I know they are for me!).

That was my problem, only knew of vi and couldn't figure it out. nano worked perfectly for me, thanks a bunch

If you're sitting there at your Linux box looking at a login screen... You can either:

- log in, open a terminal window (there's one somewhere on the menu), su to root and type:
Code:
ls -l /sbin/init /sbin/telinit
find / -name init -o -name telinit
- If they don't show the command, log in, open a terminal window, su to root, edit /etc/inittab and reboot (I hate that word)
- From the GUI login screen type <Ctl><Alt><F1> (or 2,3,4,5,6), login as root and try the steps above.
