smartd problem

On my new machine (P4 3.0 Ghz) I can't get smartd to run on startup on my FC2 box. I get the following error message

Oct 21 09:13:44 pczo smartd[1961]: Opened configuration file /etc/smartd.conf
Oct 21 09:13:44 pczo smartd[1961]: Configuration file /etc/smartd.conf parsed.
Oct 21 09:13:44 pczo smartd[1961]: Device: /dev/sda, opened
Oct 21 09:13:44 pczo smartd[1961]: Device: /dev/sda, Fetch of IEC (SMART) mode page failed, err=3, skip device
Oct 21 09:13:44 pczo smartd[1961]: Unable to register SCSI device /dev/sda at line 22 of file /etc/smartd.conf
Oct 21 09:13:44 pczo smartd[1961]: Unable to register device /dev/sda (no Directive -d removable). Exiting.
Oct 21 09:13:44 pczo smartd: smartd startup failed

the smart.conf file just reads

/dev/sda -a
