Should I update to FC3
I am currently running FC1 at the moment and am quite happy with it.
Ive just downloaded FC3 and have installed it on a spare harddrive to test it out before upgrading every thing but a few things concern me!
Does this distro use a totally different file system or something?
when I open the system monitor to view disk usage, Instead of seeing the standard
/
/boot
and other stuff I see
/dev/Mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00
and If I open a terminal and go to /boot and then ls
there is nothing there???
Where is the bootloader?
Even things like fdisk wont work
I hope this doesn't mean I have to start over and relearn the operating system!!
I'm running fc3 on a few machines and it seems to work fine. One thing I do is update as soon as I boot the first time which might be why I haven't seen any problems. fc3 by default I think uses volumes for the file system which I think is why you are seeing the "/dev/Mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00". I don't have it on mine since I setup the partition myself. I think there is something odd in your /boot since mine has everything you would expect. try updating if you haven't already and see if it works more normal
Same here, my /boot directory is intact. Do some research on this forum and on google before procedding with an upgrade coz some people have had problems with upgrades, so checking for possible problems and solutions can save you from a lot of stress later.
I upgraded mine and didn't have any problem at all!!! However, since I got so much junk on that machine, I've decided to back up my /home and re-installed the whole thing with FC3. So, it should be fine if you upgrade from FC1 to FC3.

Yes you can.
If the spare drive is about the same size as your currrent drive then why not dupicate your setup to the spare. Remove the fc1 master and run only the spare. Run Upgrade on it and see how it goes. If all is well then at least you will not have to setup everything over.
