Several odd issues with Fedora 9

I seem to have several odd issues with Fedora 9, some perhaps related, some not.

1) The network manager icon on the panel tells me the network is not connected, even when it is. I can ping all other systems on our local network, and I have no trouble browsing to internet sites.

2) Perhaps related to this, Firefox always comes up in "work offline" mode. Simply unchecking it makes everything work fine.

3) If a folder on the desktop is selected, and then double-clicked to try and open it, nothing happens. Selecting another icon on the desktop and then going back to the folder seems to take care of this. This is also happened with other folders not on the desktop, but it doesn't seem to be consistent with them.

4) When I run the Update System utility and click the update button, nothing happens. The same is true when I run Add/Remove Software and click the install button. No error messages, nothing. Running yum directly from the command line works fine.

None of these are critical issues. But I would like to get them fixed. System is an AMD Sempron 2600 processor, 512 mb memory, ATI Radeon 9200 video card.

Any clues as to where to look are appreciated.

Thanks

Bill

I recognize the symptoms you describe very well.
However, my machine is standalone and that may make a lot of difference.
Unlike you, I could not connect to internet *at all*.

What I tried (no special order):
Relabel on reboot via SELinux, which worked shortly, then internet connection failed again.
Set SEL to permissive (+ relabel), no success.
Set SEL to disabled (+ relabel), no success.
Followed SEL's own recommended commands to repair, no success.
Disabled several services that start up by default, no success.

I have switched from DHCP to static IP configuration, and now I have a working connection.

Several services are still switched off.
SEL is set (again) to enforcing.
SEL asks me if I want to "Keep Authorization" or "Forget Authorization" and either choice appears to have no noticeable effect.

The GUI Fedora updater works.

Maybe we both are missing something obvious: you received no answers at all (problem too trivial or too difficult?), I have found no solution, except my own unsatisfactory one, unsatisfactory because I do not understand what is going on.

Just to let you know you are not alone :)

I had the same issue.

I tried opening the Network Config app (System->Administration->Network) and editing eth0. On the edit dialog, I checked "Controlled by Network Manager". This made things much better.

Annoying, really that a silly applet seems to be checked before certain net apps are run.
