Setting up my printer with the Live CD
 

I've tried loading the Live CD just to poke around Fedora and I was wondering if it's possible to set up my HP Deskjet printer using the Live CD, or do you have to have Fedora installed on your hard drive in order to do that? Seems to me the purpose of a Live CD is to see if it works with your hardware so I should be able to do that but don't know how. When I tried adding a printer all the options were greyed out so that didn't work. I did get this error when I tried printing with my printer:

An error occurred while retrieving the printer list. Connection to CUPS server failed. Check that the CUPS server is correctly installed and running. Error: Connection Refused.

Which live CD?

Try doing it as root.

The Live CD I downloaded from Linux4all.de. It's supposedly based on Fedora Core 3. And I am logged in as root.

Point is, while there are live CD's based on Fedora Core (a couple more: Aurox and ADIOS), there are no "official" Fedora-supported live CD's.

That being the case, your best bet is to use the bug tracker and forums the creator of Basilisk provides, to ask about that problem.

Well I did post a similar message on the Linux4all website but I kind of doubt whether anyone will help cuz there only appears to be 2 messages in the entire forum and those were dated in January and didn't get a response either.

I'm trying out Basilisk as we speak. Pretty good treatment of KDE, better than Fedora's shoddy treatment. (Stop hatin' on us KDE users, Fedora devs!) Correctly configures eth0 for DHCP. Doesn't correctly configure my wheelmouse.

Anyway, as far as your question goes, doesn't look like the CUPS daemon's started by default. Go to a terminal and type

/etc/init.d/cups status

And if it says it's not running, type:

/etc/init.d/cups start

Then run your printer configuration.

Thanks. I followed your instructions and it worked. I'm not to sure if I should install this distro or not. I'm worried about not being able to access my zip drive and my usb drive. And it appears that I will need to learn new commands to create directories for those since the commands that I typed in Mandrake and Linspire didn't work here.

Fedora will detect and mount your USB and Zip drives just fine. Have 'em turned on when you install, and detection and mounting will be done automatically.

If there's one thing I'd like to impress upon you (besides the fact that the Linux4all CD isn't "the" official Fedora live CD), it's this: Running Linux off a live CD is totally different than running Linux from your hard drive!
