Screensavers (gnome and x): Multiple Mysteries

I've searched the forum (and elsewhere) for help on these problems but still have not solved them. So I'm starting a new thread. Any help will be much appreciated.

I've recently installed F9. I've used Fedora since FC1 but still amaze myself at how little I really know! Anyway, after installing F9, I used yum to manually install all the xscreensaver packages. Now both appear in System->Preferences->Look and Feel.

(1) All I really wanted to do was disable gnome-screensaver and enable xscreensaver. When opening gnome-screen in Look and Feel, a window entitled "Screensaver Preferences" opens. There is no setting available to disable gnome-screensaver from being started at reboot.

Question: Can this be done and how?

(2) When opening xscreensaver in Look and Feel, a similar window entitled "Screensaver Preferences (XScreenSaver 5.06-3, 09-Aug-2008)" opens. But two additional dialogue boxes also open. The first says that the gnome screensaver daemon is running and gives the option to stop it. The second says that the xscreensaver daemon is NOT running and gives the option to start it. When I do this, xscreensaver runs fine--until the next reboot. Then gnome is back in command!

Question: How can I make xscreensaver start at reboot instead of gnome-screensaver?

(3) But here is a mystery: If the gnome-screensaver daemon is running, why can't I find it under System->Administration->Services? I thought all daemons are listed there.

Question: Why isn't the gnome-screensaver daemon listed?

(4) Now here is another mystery. I tried to uninstall gnome-screensaver. This produced very strange behavior on the part of rpm. Here is the result:

rpm -e gnome-screensaver-2.22.1-1.fc9.i386

error: Failed dependencies:
gnome-screensaver is needed by (installed) fedorainfinity-screensaver-theme-1.0.0-1.fc8.noarch
gnome-screensaver is needed by (installed) fedora-screensaver-theme-1.0.0-1.fc8.noarch
gnome-screensaver is needed by (installed) xscreensaver-gl-extras-gss-5.06-3.fc9.i386
gnome-screensaver is needed by (installed) xscreensaver-extras-gss-5.06-3.fc9.i386

So I then removed these four dependencies. When I tried again, ANOTHER list of dependencies was issued! In exasperation, I ran:

rpm -q --whatrequires gnome-screensaver-2.22.1-1.fc9.i386

The astonishing result was:

no package requires gnome-screensaver-2.22.1-1.fc9.i386

Question: What in the world is wrong with rpm?

---------------------------------------

Any help on these issues will be most appreciated. Thanks.

Bill
