Screen Issues?
I want to put fedora core onto my laptop, a dell inspiron 1150 with 40gb hdd and 1280mb ram, as a dual boot. That in itself is not a problem, but my cousin told me that there are screen issues with all linux releases which mean that the screen wont fill on a normal 15" monitor. Is this true with Fedora? Is there any way to prevent this? We tried Ubuntu, and had the problem and were unable to rectify it as it just wasnt possible to increase the resolution from about 600x800 to the native screen size of 1024x768. This left empty space around the screen. If there is any way to prevent this, i would greatly appreciate knowing, as i think Linux is vastly superior to Windows, which i use at the moment.

There's no reason that you can't get the screen resolution you need. Install Fedora and then if the screen is not right you can edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf to get the resolution. A lot of times xorg.conf just doesn't have the correct vertical and horizontal sync ranges, or it's trying to do 1280x1024 when the monitor will only do 1024x768 max. Sounds like your cousin has never used a computer.

Thanks
Please excuse my ignorance, but will this work in Ubuntu? And where do i find that directory? Im a total newbie to Linux.
Thanks for the help George |
No reason why this would not work in Ubuntu. This is more Linux in general than Fedora specific.

Thanks
We looked into the page, and found the resolution settings, but when editing them, it wouldnt let us save it, to do with pemissions. We were logged in as the root, and still couldnt get it to work

You will need to log in as root temporarily. The file is read-only for regular users.

There is an issue with laptop displays, where the BIOS does not report the screen correctly, so XOrg can't set the display resolution during install. If you search on these forums for 855resolution or 915resolution, you should find threads about fixes. This is thread I know has some info http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=496953
This is also a problem with other distributions. I have Suse Linux on Acer and Dell laptops. The Acer installed correctly, but I had to tweak the Dell with 915resoliution. |
Thanks
Thanks. Ill pass it onto my cousin.
